Divorce Controversy and continued re-editing[edit]

Hershiser married Jamie Byars. Byars and Hershiser had two children, Quinton and Jordan.

He and Jamie divorced in early 2002. Bigbadkeeper 9 June 2006

Updated the personal section on Hershiser. It's always being changed to him being divorced, and now an attack on his Christianity is in play. I've updated it with current and readily available and researchable facts. I think, until further proof can be obtained on a divorce, it should be kept with him as married.Jubbub55 15:32, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NO DIVORCE.[edit]

Orel and His wife didn't divorce, they're board members for the MARRIAGE and FAMILY MATTERS NATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD. They joined this in early 2005, and they speak out against divorce

Hey unsigned, you should get out more often or perhaps read a bit more, or maybe you aren't as much of a fan as you thought. Try reading the L.A. Times, or asking the man himself.

"Hershiser said he and his wife have been divorced for a year and a half but share custody." [1]Bigbadkeeper 9 June 2006

DIVORCE CLARIFICATION[edit]

Does anyone have more positive proof of a divorce, besides an LA times article that often misquotes? Jubbub 20:51, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bigbadkeeper does not seem to have any proof of Orel & Jamie Hershiser being divorced. His link to a so-called L.A. Times article leads nowhere and I have scoured the internet to find one shred of evidence supporting the claim of a divorce and have found NOTHING! Bigbadkeeper better get his facts straight and be ready to back them up. If he would stop talking to everyone like we are morons and just have a discussion we might be able to get to the bottom of this together. Jcating12

Still searching the internet and haven't found to date an article or announcement on a Divorce. I find it 'fishy'that the Hershisers would divorce in 2002, and then join a Marriage and Family Matters organization in 2005 and be listed as husband and wife. Could it be that Bigbadkeeper has errored on his proof? (Jubbub55 17:59, 3 June 2007 (UTC))[reply]

  • Typo on the date, I meant 2005. The source is:

1) L.A. Times article (http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/dodgers/la-sp-tvcol9jun09,1,7356487.column?coll=la-headlines-sports-mlb-dodger)with direct quote from Hershiser. Sorry it's archived, perhaps you can access it from a public computer (library, school, etc).

Aperantly Jubbub (or is it Jubbub55 now?)can access it, as he claims it misquotes, without specifying what those are.Bigbadkeeper 09:59, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just want more proof than that particular article. You can't believe everything that LA Times puts out. It is a newspaper after all, and if it wants to portray a particular saying, then they'll say the source said it. I just think that if he is divorced, the LA Times wouldn't have been the only paper to claim this. The article you posted last year had a one-lined quote, and treated it as matter of fact, and if this is where Bigbadkeeper is getting all of his DIVORCED information, I think he needs to have more proof to show. (Jubbub55 22:01, 10 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

So, essentially what you are stating is that the L.A. Times literally made up the subject of his divorce. Think about that, literally made up the entire subject?

Do you really think that they would actually just make up this entire subject? Create a false quote and all? Are you aware of how silly that makes you look?

As far as other sources go, you clearly overestimate the status of Mr. Hershiser. He simply isn't an important enough figure to have a great deal of media coverage, either of him or his personal life. --Bigbadkeeper 21:49, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found an article that talks about poker and also says the Hershisers divorced. http://www.bluffmagazine.com/magazine/Part-time-poker-player,-Full-time-MLB-Great...Orel-Hershiser-Bluff-Staff-1449.htm

Hershiser decided to take the game seriously. “After I went through my divorce, I started dating a woman from Las Vegas. When I would come to visit her, I wouldn’t have anything to do while she was working, so I started going over to Bellagio to play cards.”

Hall of Fame voting?[edit]

Does anyone know how Hershier did on his first year on the Hall of Fame ballot? Or is he not going to be on it until next year? -Darwin's Bulldog 02:08, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I found the voting polls on MLB Hall of Fame website. Hershiser received 11.2% in the voting, which makes him eligable to remain on the list for 2007, as a minimum of 5% is neceissary to remain on the ballet. 128.111.97.60 23:08, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For 2007, Hershiser only received 4.4% vote, so he is no longer eligible for the Hall of Fame. This is pitiful. I was listening to Ronnie Lane's XM radio broadcast on how every detail of the character is looked at on voting him into the Hall of Fame, character (on and off the field), career stats, love for the game, sportsmanship, compassion, and records. Yet the writers only gave him 20-something votes (4.4%), thereby eliminating a player who met or exceeded all of the above areas of interest. Here's a player who holds a 59 consect. scoreless inning record that is and has been compared to DiMaggio's hitting streak, yet he will never be eligible to be in the Hall of Fame. What do writers know? Where are the fans of baseball? (Jubbub55 17:59, 3 June 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Rotator cuff? Isn't that a rotator cup?

Mglovesfun 02:16, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nope it's a rotator cuff. Mea culpa Mglovesfun 02:17, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality[edit]

Does anyone else consider that this article lacks neutrality? Not to mention a citation about the scoreless innings record. It does read like a bit of a eulogy from a fan. When I have time I might try and rephrase some of the phrases like 'great pitcher' which is really just a POV statement.

Mglovesfun 02:25, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

didn't he play hockey?[edit]

I seem to recall an SI article way back when which showed him as a hockey player and part of the reason he went to Bowling Green was to play both hockey and baseball. That's something else to be brought up in the article. DandyDan2007 06:18, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hershiser participated in and was a well regarded youth hockey player, but that's from personal reminiscence-I don't know where his participation might be cited.69.248.237.239 09:00, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Little League baseball[edit]

The article mentions that Hershiser won the Little League World Series while living in Cherry Hill, NJ. While Hershiser was certainly a fine Little League ballplayer and participated in the tournament, a team from Cherry Hill has never won the Little League World Series. This is confirmed by the Little League Media Guide at http://www.littleleague.org/media/mediaguide/mediaguide.pdf. Could it be another youth baseball league that is being referred to?69.248.237.239 09:00, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Orel Hershiser.jpg[edit]

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. "People from Dallas, Texas"?[edit]

How exactly does that tag appear on the bottom for categories? It says after retiring that he was a pitching coach for the Rangers and his kid went to school there, and that's it. If anything, he's "from" Buffalo, NY or from NJ, or even Las Vegas where he has chosen to reside now. Hershiser is as much from Dallas as Jerome Williams (baseball) is from Chicago. 24.12.72.168 (talk) 20:46, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main image[edit]

I have added a new image (the middle image to the right) that I took a week and a half ago to replace an image from over 6.5 years ago (image on the left) as the main image. My thinking is that it is better for multiple reasons:

  1. It is 6.5 years newer
  2. He is in a suit (which looks professional)
  3. The suit is approximately Dodger blue
  4. The picture shows his hair.

I was reverted in terms of the main image by Yankees10 who felt that because the new image shows slightly less of his face, we should use the old image. I prefer either of the new images that I have posted. Comments welcome.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:22, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think the middle one is best, followed by the left, then the right. The one on the left can still be incorporated elsewhere in the article ... Go Phightins! 10:28, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't care enough to discuss it further (I probably changed my mind anyway since the picture was made larger), but I will say your reasons for your picture are rather silly.--Yankees10 16:05, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It may be a trivial reason, but I prefer the middle option since, as an infobox image, he would be facing the text. It flows a little better visually. For similar reasons, the left image would work well if left aligned in the body of the article. Resolute 19:36, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine with the new image thats in the info box. Spanneraol (talk) 19:46, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Reasons 2 and 3 seem unimportant to me. However I think the middle photo depicts Hershiser more clearly, and has a clear contrasting background, and so I believe it is the best choice. isaacl (talk) 21:26, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy with either option 1 or 2, no preference towards one over the other. I do think the image being newer is irrelevant when it's hard to discern any difference in his appearance. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 16:41, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think he looks like he lost weight and the new one shows graying hair, which is an older look than a baseball cap if you ask me.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:35, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pitching Style[edit]

Uncertain if him - But I recall " a ways" back a Pitcher that Had a Real Low average pitches per batter faced. - Not A recorded stat but makes for a quick playing game. (Chance if NOT him Don Sutton) Wfoj3 (talk) 19:19, 11 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
