Phonetic pronunciation needed (IPA)[edit]

"pronounced onk-an" looks very amateurish and is not useful. The letter 'o' has many possible pronunciations in English and so does the letter 'a'. I think that the best IPA for Onchan would be /ˈɒnkən/ or possibly /ˈɒnxən/ if pronounced with a harder Gaelic 'ch'.--217.203.141.243 (talk) 21:47, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Trouble is, a large number of people (myself included) cannot understand IPA, so "onk-an" is very useful. For example, I have no idea what the difference between /ˈɒnkən/ and /ˈɒnxən/ actually sounds like, but if you said it was pronounced "on-chan" rather than "onk-an" I would know exactly what you mean. Bishop[edit]

Think about this phrase "The name of the village is identified with St Connachan who was Bishop of Sodor and Man in 540". Fact: Diocese of Sodor and Man was established in the year 1154. I'll say no more. :-) --FinnWiki (talk) 16:57, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are more things I can not get to fit. The name "Kiondroghad" as an explantion of the name for the village is not confirmed with this article Parish of Kirk Conchan, fra Manx Place-names, 1925: "The patronal saint of this parish was St. Christopher, but he was better known in Ireland under his Gaelic name Conchenn". That makes sense.

And this sentence worry me: "the village moved out of Church Road, known locally as The Butt". The Butt? This sounds like vandalism to me. --FinnWiki (talk) 22:09, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to edit this page, but some of the text is too garbled to make sense. For instance, under Transport:

The village is also served frequently by the buses of Bus Vannin with many dedicated services between the village and the capital Douglas, serving the many housing estates including Ballachrink, Lakeside Gardens, Birch Hill and Governor's Hill, the latter being located in Douglas but through services often link all estates.
