Title[edit]

Given that this was released under several English titles (the BFI link lists a few variations), is there any particular reason it was moved from its original name to one which only a few sources are using? GRAPPLE X 23:11, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: Move. There is no significant opposition and there is consensus that it should be moved on the ground of it being the common name. There is insuffcient discussion to conclude whether or not there is consensus on which name should be chosen per WP:NCF#Foreign-language films, though it seems to lean move, but that point is moot since the discussion concluded that the move should be performed based on the common name Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 11:29, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Strip Nude for Your Killer → Nude per l'assassino – The recent move seems to suggest that WP:NCF#Foreign-language films has been misinterpreted. The original move request quoted "the title under which it has been released in cinemas or on video in the English-speaking world"; which seems a selective quotation from the actual text (emphasis mine)—Use the title more commonly recognized by English readers; normally this means the title under which it has been released in cinemas or on video in the English-speaking world". However, the sources used in the article—and, as a Good Article, it's been extensively sourced and researched—are mixed on the matter of a title. The more scholarly sources, including the British Film Institute, long-running journal Nocturno, the cited print sources and WP:FILM's favourite workhorse AllRovi all make use of Nude per l'assassino. The titles Strip Nude for Your Killer/Strip Naked for Your Killer are used simply by sources reviewing the recent DVD and Blu-Ray home releases. It seems pretty clear therefore that the "more commonly recognized" title is going to be the one used by the larger and more established sources, not the recently-skewed home release section. This is before even going into how WP:NCF#Foreign-language films has long since passed out of common practice across the film project (one need only throw a dart at WP:FA to find plenty of foreign-language films with their original release titles intact). Support move. As Grapple says, the Italian title, aside from being the only fixed one (i.e. not differing from place to place), is more common throughout the sources than the English title. Comment: I have often argued that while WP:COMMONNAME says we should use the name most frequently used to refer to the subject in English language reliable sources, it does not say we should use the English language name most commonly used (i.e. if the name most commonly used in reliable sources is a non-English name, use it). I am not sure what the common name is for this article, but imdb suggests Strip Nude for Your Killer may be no more notable as a title than Die Nacht der blanken Messer, if the English title was only applied to the US DVD release. Do we know under which title this film was released in the UK or Australia and New Zealand? Looking at the sources cited in the article, the common name looks like a toss-up.
