Too much about 'Epping - Ongar Line'[edit]

I fear that previous edits have dwelled too much on the defunct Epping – Ongar line. My main concern is that there is more to the village than the line, and for the most part they don’t add anything to the main topic of North Weald village. I hope my current edit readdress the balance.(Spymo (talk) 19:33, 12 December 2008 (UTC))[reply]

I propose merging North Weald Bassett to here and then moving this back to that title (and that page history moving to North Weald Bassett (parish)). "North Weald Bassett" is the name of the village and the consensus at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject England/Parishes RfC is clear that we don't need 2 articles when village and parish have the same name. • Knowing the village well for many years, although I cannot be referred to as a source, I know for certainty that locals refer to the village as 'North Weald' but I'm quite prepared to believe they use the shortened form for convenience, for instance two of many being North Weald Methodist Church Hall and North Weald Village Hall.[1][2][3] Even the parish council and local historians prefer the village 'North Weald' moniker.[4][5][6] It is not unknown for even local and district authorities to be confused, even in the road signs for which they are responsible.[7][8] A reliance on OS can't always be dependable; OS too can be variable. There is a case argued for Wikipedia to use the most common and recognizable usage form.
I have no objection to changing the article name in principle, and I shall email the district and parish council to get their view. However, having waited for Epping Upland to get back to a number of emails on the spelling of Jacks (Jack's) Hatch for two years, waiting for a response may be a forlorn hope... maybe Covid will give them extra time to address it. It seems likely that the village has "Bassett" dropped frequently even though it appears part of the name still and in any case like Thornaby (name of parish)/Thornaby-on-Tees (name of town) and Aston-on-Trent (name of village)/Aston upon Trent (name of parish) that they are alternative names for the same thing.
