I have created a series of templates for former students of Oxford's various colleges. There are still plenty to do, but if you want to add one of the templates to your user page then feel free. Gary Grue

Who is Gary Grue? Is he really a notable former student of New College? From what I found by looking on google ir doesn't seem that he is.--AlexanderLondon 12:15, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Gary Grue is notable all right, but probably does not warrant being on wikipedia!
I am wholly against this systematic erasure of references to Gary Grue, a figure who clearly warrants an entry in the dictionary of national biography, let alone wikipedia...
If you'd like to show us that he is notable enough for inclusion and have verifiabile information, as in producing reliable sources, I'd certainly consider it. Apart from drinking on YouTube and Blogging his own experiences is their anything encylopedic to say about the character?--Alf melmac 18:55, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Notable former students

I've tagged this section of the article as an example farm; currently this is in the form of a (large) embedded list, but the article is a non-list format article: it needs to be reformatted into prose. There are also, as I say, an inordinate number of examples. This issue has been tackled on other Oxford college articles by moving content to a new 'List of X college people'. A good example of an Oxford college article is Oriel College, Oxford where this approach has also been taken: see Oriel College, Oxford#People_associated_with_the_College which is written in prose, as it should be, and contains a link to another article entitled List_of_Oriel_College_people. I recommend this approach be taken here and will work on this provided there is consensus. If there are no replies I will be bold and make the changes anyway. MCR President

I changed the MCR President from Andrew McClennan to Thomas Adcock when the latter replaced the former after the MCR held elections in Hilary term. But Thomas Adcock shows up when I'm logged in, but if I'm logged out it's still Andrew McClennan. Why is this? And can it be properly updated to Thomas Adcock please?

Motto

Does anyone know of a reference indicating that William of Wykeham did in fact intend his motto to convey the social message the article ascribes to it? Olaf Davis (talk) 10:40, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Possibly the book "New College, Oxford, 1379-1979". I have it back at New, but at the moment I am not at the College. I will be returning in 10 days' time or so, and will check then. Land sale and COI

A paragraph about the 2006 land sale and resultant salary windfall has been appearing and disappearing from the article. Its most recent incarnation began "In the past, this entry has repeatedly and incorrectly claimed that...", which is not really appropriate: encyclopaedia readers don't want to know what Wikipedia once said, they want to know about the College. I've reworded to avoid this self-reference and give what I hope is a balanced summary of the sale's outcomes. I've left the information in the lede, which is probably not the best place for it, for want of an obvious target - feel free to move it.

Also I should probably mention that I'm a member of the College and have been employed by them on an extremely part-time basis. I'm not a fellow and was not affiliated with them in 2006 so I don't think my ability to edit neutrally is compromised; still, if anyone disagrees I'll happily restrict myself to the article talk page. I have added "and the subsequent extra endowment income was used ..." just to make it clear that it was the extra income (which resulted from the overall increase in the value of the College endowment) used for these purposes, not the actual money from the sale itself. 82.24.255.142 (talk) 23:09, 12 December 2009 (UTC)


Endowment

"It is one of the wealthier colleges, with an estimated financial endowment of £71m (2003, although due to a recent land sale, this figure will rise to £125m in 2007)."

Is this correct? Does the figure for the college's endowment not include property in any case, in which case the sale would simply tranfer money from one part of the accounts to another? Or do the figures quoted for Oxford college endowments include only cash, in which case they are not necessarily any guide at all to the wealth of a college...? --Casper Gutman 17:52, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Endowment normally includes both, but a land sale can nevertheless increase total endownment in cases where the land gains permission for development and is sold to a developer for much more than its recent value (this is quite a common way for land-owning institutions to increase total endowment). 82.24.255.142 (talk) 23:38, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Popular culture

I removed the popular culture section due to WP:TRIVIA, I'll archive it here in case anyone needs it

New College was used as a filming location for the 1991 Inspector Morse episode "Fat Chance" in which it doubled as the fictitious "St Saviour's College." In the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.[1] In Tomorrow Never Dies, the Holywell Buildings are used as the location of the 'Swedish Embassy'.[2] New College appears in the alternate Oxford of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials as 'Wykeham College'.[3] In the 2005 film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, New College Cloisters served as the Hogwarts background for some scenes, notably that in which Draco Malfoy is transformed into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody.

In Cakes and Ale by W. Somerset Maugham, the character Alroy Kear, believed to be a parody of Hugh Walpole, is a graduate of New College. In the opening chapter, the narrator describes Kear's time at the college, saying "he was president of the Union and but for an unfortunate attack of measles might very well have got his rowing blue".

ROWING

I'm not sure this is correct. My understanding is that the New College crew were against the Magdalene Crew (rowing on behalf of Leander) in the Olympic final. Due to Magdalene going against the etiquette of the day they chose the shorter side of the river (straighter) and won Gold. This explains the rivalry between the two boat crews and the NCBC toast "God Damn Bloody Magdalene.
