Location?[edit]

Could anyone tell me exactly where the studios were? I've taken some pics of Hampden Gurney St and although it obviously would be better to have some pics of the studios at the time, a modern pic would at least give some feel for the area even if the building is no longer there.Le Deluge (talk) 11:32, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It was Hampden Gurney St. W.1., 500, according to this article/interview. --Jashiin (talk) 11:59, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - but the 500 is not an address but referring to the metres from Marble Arch (and London W1 is the general postcode area for Westminster). I'm guessing it's the block of flats on the northeast side towards the Seymour Place end - which would imply that the coordinates in the article are spot on (click on the coordinates top right and go through to Bing birdseye view or Google Maps satellite view) - but it would be nice to know for certain. Ouch, my mistake about the 500, and I had no idea what W1 stood for. Anyway, maybe searching for the name of the studios ("Hampden Gurney Studios") can help? I tried Google Books and found their ad in a 1985 publication, which states the address "Hampden Gurney St. W1H 5AL". But I guess that's still not it, eh? --Jashiin (talk) 19:24, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good find, but yes it doesn't help too much. That's the full postcode, which probably applied to the whole of Hampden Gurney St, or at best one side of it. Interestingly, it does seem to point on Google Maps to that new block of flats today, but that would only be the centre of the postcode area. However the school seems to have retained that postcode, despite moving several blocks north to what would normally be a different postcode. I'm getting more comfortable with the idea that it's the big block of flats, but I'm in no hurry - it's going to take me months to process all the photos I've taken, and no doubt at some stage someone will appear here who has direct experience of the studios. I've had that kind of thing happen elsewhere on Wikipedia. Thanks for your help, anyway. Le Deluge (talk) 23:42, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
