Bizarre addition 25/7/09[edit]

I don't know what this addition is all about. I've removed it mainly because it's unreferenced, and suggests a joke. However, it's rather more thoroughly researched than normal vandalism and certainly must have taken a lot more effort to write, so it would be interesting to hear if it has any basis in fact. Hi there Rob. I wrote this. I will hold my hands up: it's a complete fabrication, from beginning to end. Not a single word is true on any conceivable level. But I am unrepentant, and I'll tell you why. Because there is a great deal beauty in this story, you saw it yourself when you acknowledged that it was, and I quote "rather more thoroughly researched than normal vandalism and certainly must have taken a lot more effort to write". Not my words, Rob. Yours. Wouldn't the world be a more magical and beautiful place if we cast off the straightjacket of literal "truth" and manipulated history any way we wanted to? My thoughts are that yes, it would, and furthermore that Wikipedia is a wonderful place to begin this crusade. Strangely enough though you say that you fabricated this entry there is an element of truth in what you wrote! Maybe the stars or something aligned so that though you thought you were inventing tall but beautifully crafted tales really God was speaking, or more precisely writing, through you and revealing a few quirky facts about some of our favourite quizzers. Here's fact number 1, Hughes did write "The Great Railway Quiz Book" here is a link to Amazon^[1] ! And it is spectacularly bad, it is retailing at one pence from one of the sellers! I once bought a copy and though this one is just my humble opinion so could never ever make it beyond the discussion pages and onto a real wikipedia page it is the worst idea for a hardback book ever and however decided to publish it should be shot (metaphorically not literally of course, I'm a pacifist). Fact number two, I'll have to find a link to it but Hughes was a friend Neil Richardson as there was some controversy when he won Mastermind as he had strong ties to the makers of the show and some thought this improper. Though we may never know if he came up with 'A Toad's Progress' AKA the Mastemind Theme there is certainly a possibility that he did and knowing of Hughes musical talents see here^[2] does nothing to dispel the rumours. Fact number 3 Hughes is the Autodidact's Autodidact he was voted number one in a poll by Autodidacts Magazine in 2004 with the claim, "While Kevin Ashman is probably the quiz king, his formal education and professional career in the civil service rules him out from this list, Hughes however shot from being a mere train driver to celebrity quizzer through his own self taught brilliance. Mr Hughes we salute you". Fact 4 , unfortunately Hughes does look a bit like a giant toad. Approaching Menace[edit]

Does anybody know how "Approaching Menace" got its title? If so, this would make an interesting addition to the article. Vorbee (talk) 18:57, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's a bit of KPM library music, and they always have descriptive titles so TV/film producers can find a certain mood. I suspect it's just a reference to how the 'approaching menace' gets closer and closer (i.e. louder). I've always assumed it was meant to be an approaching army, because of the drums and brass.
