Historic mural at post office[edit]

I added material with source about reception of a historic mural (some hated it, some later liked it); another editor removed it for reason not clear to me, though I grant that the presentation could be improved. I tried improving the brief presentation. More expanded treatment will be sensible in a separate article about the post office, which should now be created. But some summary that there are positives and negative reactions is interesting, relevant, i think. Please discuss here, don't simply remove the source and info which I think is relevant. --doncram 18:38, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The statement about the mural's cost and reception is at once too general and too specific. It's too general, in that virtually any work of public art was probably "both praised and panned" at about the time of its unveiling. It's too specific for what purports to be a summary, particularly since the cost of the work and its reception don't appear to be particularly relevant to its addition to the NRHP.
I recently acquired a copy of Robert Puschendorf's book on the Nebraska PO murals, of which Doncram's Omaha World-Herald article is a review, and which presumably provided all the facts re. the murals in the OWH article. I'm in the process of working up a set of articles on these post offices, using this book as a principal source. The reaction of the Valentine public and press will be duly incorporated into that article when it's written. Ammodramus (talk) 23:41, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, good. Your developing articles on all these would be an advancement, and then I would want to defer fully to your judgment as to what is a best summary to include here in the list-article. I don't want to see backwards motion, before then, though. As you can see i really am started on developing articles for this county, and I want to use -- not lose -- the review source which is all that is available online. I'll do the other topics in the county first, and then if i do start the article before you get around to it, i won't mind your editing it to use the Puschendorf source instead of the (lesser) review source. So, hopefully we can agree to keep the lesser source for now though, until you do create or edit the article. I welcome further refinement of material from the review, but it seems not important to refine it if you are likely to replace it sometime soon anyhow. Do let's proceed to make a dent in the need for Nebraska coverage.... thanks, --doncram 02:07, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Progress on the PO articles isn't going to be altogether speedy. I'm currently at work on the Geneva PO. That needs to be set in a background of Geneva's history, postal and otherwise; and one really needs to know a bit of Fillmore County history as background for Geneva. It seems foolish to read up on the city and the county without adding information to those articles, particularly since (as much as it pains me as a member of this WikiProject to admit it) they'll probably get more page views than the NRHP articles.
So: right now, I've laid down a layer of Cretaceous sedimentary bedrock under Fillmore County, piled unconsolidated Quaternary sediment on top of that (future aquifer!), deposited loess plains atop that, and had some erosion by tributaries of the Big Blue River. I think humans have evolved by now, but I don't believe they've reached the New World yet. It's going to take a little while to get to the New Deal.
The good news is that the research I do on the WPA will presumably carry over to all the PO articles, so the first will be the slowest. There are also some interrelationships between the artists (the guy who did the mural at Geneva married the woman who painted one of the other murals, and her twin sister did yet another), and this research too won't have to be repeated with each new article.
Trust that the articles will be worth the wait... Ammodramus (talk) 00:33, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

articles in progress[edit]

To editor(s) watching, there are articles in the creation process already for a couple Cherry County NRHPs:

and watch for:

Help developing those articles while they are in the creation process, and after, would be welcomed by me. --doncram 19:07, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I dropped the photo in this list article at the Adamson Bridge entry of a replacement bridge. The photo is included in the Adamson Bridge article, but not in its NRHP infobox. It is not a pic of the NRHP-listed bridge, and it seems even not at the same crossing point. So, best to show no photo and call implicitly for a historic photo of the NRHP-listed bridge to be found. --doncram 03:47, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
