Requested move 16 November 2020[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Consensus to move to Nadella. Editors decided against the primary redirect to Satya Nadella as there is no evidence that he is the primary topic. (non-admin closure) (t · c) buidhe 05:38, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nadella (surname)Nadella (name) – Two of the three people listed have "Nadella" as a personal name, not a surname. The current disambiguator is not a good fit. 50.248.234.77 (talk) 12:44, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 15:43, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This diff shows that MRRaja001 changed the redirect target of Nadella from Nadella (surname) to Satya Nadella and prior to this, they moved this towards Nadella (surname). Reverting this move/redirect thing would be best. I guess. ─ The Aafī (talk) 13:03, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't object to moving the page to Nadella either. I simply preferred to make a more conservative request on the "techical" page. It's not clear to me that Satya Nadella is the primary topic for "Nadella" either. 50.248.234.77 (talk) 13:07, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Full disclosure: this edit byMRRaja001 (which I have reverted) seems to be an objection to the move. 50.248.234.77 (talk) 13:31, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TheAafi:@50.248.234.77: Nadella is a surname and not a name. Here are (Citation1 - [B. Ramaraju (2002). Contribution of Andhra to Samskrit Literature. Andhra University. p. 402. Medhadakshinamurti son of Muktikantamani and Purushottama kavi of Nadella family and Haritasagotra ] for Nadella Purushottama Kavi) and Citation2 - ["When diversity is seen as discrimination". Livemint. Retrieved 15 February 2014. The Nadella family, belonging to the Brahmin community, hails from the Bukkapuram village, Anantapur district. ] for Satya Nadella). Most of the references are using Satya Nadella's name as Nadella, So it's better not to change the redirect as well as the name of article either, Thanks - MRRaja001 (talk) 13:41, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TheAafi:@50.248.234.77: From the given citations and their respective quotes it is evident that it is family name or Surname and not a name. @Fylindfotberserk:@LukeEmily:@Prolix: What is your opinion on this, Thanks - MRRaja001 (talk) 13:47, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to debate about what actually Nadella is. What is certain is that its primary subject is not Satya Nadella. Nadella (surname) should be moved back to its original title Nadella. That's what I propose. Thank you. ─ The Aafī (talk) 14:24, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Now that we're into long-discussion territory, I support moving to Nadella with no disambiguation. There is no evidence that Satya Nadella is the primary meaning of Nadella, so no reason that he should get the undisambiguated term as a redirect. Furthermore, the fact that "Nadella" is sometimes used as a surname does not mean that it is always used as a surname; two of the three items on this page are not surname usages. The disambiguation page (which this is) should occupy the primary title slot. 50.248.234.77 (talk) 16:02, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@50.248.234.77: Satya Nadella, Nadella Purushottama Shastri, Nadella Nandagopal -- All the three items have Nadella as surname and not as name. - MRRaja001 (talk) 17:26, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to Nadella (and remove the existing redirect to Satya Nadella). The main topic here is the name. As an analogy, Bill Gates is often referred to as Gates. However, that doesn't mean Gates or Gates (surname) should redirect to his article.--DreamLinker (talk) 08:36, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to Nadella per DreamLinker. Being referred to by surname is not the same as a mononymous name. Case in point, none of the other surnames presented in the above references like Cook, Pichai, Ambani redirect to their bios.--Ab207 (talk) 09:11, 26 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
