Synopsis[edit]
I made some corrections and clarifications to the plot. The fact that the Major made his fortune in silver mining in the American West and then moved to New York City and tried to fit in with the established upper class is important to the plot of the film. Also, in the dinner party scene the lawyer explains to Susie why no one is at the dinner; it's not because of the Major's business dealings, but because he insulted an established member of society in the course of applying for membership in an exclusive men's private club (where they were likely looking for an excuse to keep him out anyway as he would have been considered gauche and nouveau riche due to his background). The theme of people who made fortunes in the American West not being socially accepted by New York (or Boston) society occurs in many US novels and films.
