Fred Goodwin's residence[edit]

I'm not convinced it's relevant to say Fred Goodwin's residence is in nearby Marchmont(although I'd have palced it in The Grange). Suggest removing this as it adds nothing in relation to Mornignside. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cronoz (talkcontribs) 09:07, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Layout[edit]

Can we decide on a section format to apply to all areas of edinburgh - the info in each is in a different order and it looks bad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesx12345 (talkcontribs) 19:00, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Morningside Accent[edit]

Surely, the purportedly Anglified ACCENT is worth an entry. It is a partly mythical, hypothetical, social accent, famously embodied in the performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. There are jokes that show social awareness AND how this concept is in the past. (Q: what's sex in Morningside? A: what coal comes in). There is even a PhD thesis and continued reference in dialectology. and a dictionary definition. It's like Kelvinside in Glasgow. Brodie is characterised by non-rhoticity, careful enunciation, and TRAP-raising. In research, Johnston’s (1984) study of the Morningside accent in Edinburgh, some variables (and particularly the FACE and GOAT vowels) were shown to anglicise strongly in upper middle-class speech.

Residents[edit]

We could add living people like

  • James Naughtie, journalist and broadcaster - long term and notable resident. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.106.194.24 (talk) 07:20, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Kate Atkinson, novellist, who also set scenes of one of her novels on the South Suburban Railway.

September 2020 edits[edit]

I have substantially edited this article, as follows:

  • Added new material, including citations.
  • Reorganised the sections to more closely match those of articles on other town and districts.
  • Removed a couple of notable residents for which I could find no useful citations. Feel free to reinstate if you have more information.
  • Still to do: I want to reinstate and expand the sub-section on the origin of street names once I have found some useful citations.
  • Removed the "This article has multiple issues" flag.

Mike Marchmont (talk) 14:59, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just to add some other points:

  • Rightly or wrongly, I removed some references to the churches at Holy Corner because these lie outside the official boundary of the Morningside ward. On the other hand, that might not be a good enough reason to delete them, as Holy Corner might nevertheless be considered part of Morningside. (The same might be said of the Church Hill Theatre, which I retained.)
  • Under "In popular culture", I mentioned that Maisie was added to the No.5 bus livery in 2011. But she was removed some time later when Lothian introduced their current standardised livery. But I couldn't find a citation for that. If anyone has more information, please edit accordingly

I have now added the sub-section on the origin of street names. Mike Marchmont (talk) 09:55, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Good additions. Next step would be restructure as per [[Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements LordHarris (talk) 12:02, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Morningside Clock[edit]

At 16:28, 12 November 2021, an IP editor added a statement to the effect that the clock was temporarily moved because of a large number of car crashes. I can find no evidence for this assertion, which I have flagged as "citation needed". Can someone provide a reference for this? If not, I intend to delete it. Thank you. Mike Marchmont (talk) 09:50, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: Having now searched the relevant media, I can find no references to any car crashes, or any other kind of accidents, in connection with the clock. So I have removed the relevant statement. If any other editor has information to the contrary, by all means re-instate the sentence in question. Thank you. Mike Marchmont (talk) 13:07, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
