multiple meanings--linked wrong?[edit]

Some of the symbols have multiple meanings. For an obvious example, the male and female symbols are also symbols for the planets mars and venus respectively. Unfortunately, because of the way this is linked, there's no easy way to represent this. If the descriptions, rather than the symbols themselves, were links, then this would be easy to resolve:

The BMP[edit]

What font is used in the BMP image to display every character so perfectly? Many of mine either do not show up or are using the wrong font and appear squished or out-of-place. RedAugust 20:09, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gender related symbols[edit]

It seems to me that some of the links attached to the sexual sysmbols on this page are questionable. Let us take a look at these signs, and see if we can agree on their meanings. Let's start with some easy ones. I think we all agree that ♂ (MALE SIGN) refers to a male. Similarly ♀ (FEMALE SIGN) refers to a female. Finally ⚲ (NEUTER) refers to neuter. Now we go on. ⚢ (DOUBLED FEMALE SIGN) indicates a female-female (lesbian) relationship. ⚣ (DOUBLED MALE SIGN) indicates a male-male (gay male) relationship. Please note that the signs clearly do not refer to a the sexual orientation of an individual, as it is quite clear by the two separate (but interlocking) circles that the symbol refers to a relationship. So by the same token ⚤ (INTERLOCKED FEMALE AND MALE SIGN) refers to a heterosexual relationship. However, the symbol is currently linked to Bisexual. ⚥ (MALE AND FEMALE SIGN) following the rules of strict interpretation, this symbol should represent hermaphrodite (complete set of male and female parts). It could also validly represent male/female unity. If bisexuals insist on having a symbol, this symbol is probably more acceptable for that purpose too. For some reason though it currently links to transsexual. I really don't like that, as there is a separate symbol more appropriate. ⚦(MALE WITH STROKE SIGN) or the vertical or horizontal variants would best go with transexual. One can see from the symbol that is is similar to the male symbol, but also includes the cross bar, which is the special feature of females. This symbols thus clearly refers to anybody who does not fit into the standard genders. This would properly include transexuals and intersex individuals. Proof of this intepretation is found in the next symbol. ⚧ (MALE WITH STROKE AND MALE AND FEMALE SIGN) is a superimposition of the standard male, standard female, and the previous symbol. It is a symbol of pride within some members of the transgender community, and clearly shows a sense of unity between the male gender, the female gender, and those who don't quite fit in with either. 66.254.241.199 (talk) 21:48, 12 December 2007 (UTC) [reply]

⚤ currently has this: Heterosexuality, bisexuality. I fail to see how it indicates bisexuality. Bisexuality means you like both sexes, but there is 1 male connected to 1 female. Nothing "bi" to me. 85.217.42.205 (talk) 09:20, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I′m not convinced this is helpful, but assuming I did want to upload a screen-shot, I wonder whether I

Should color all the links blue in a graphic editor,
Should try harder to find an appropriate redirect targets,
Should just upload it to WP/commons as it is now, or:
Should wait for someone else to deal with it.

Fonts[edit]

I don't know where I should adress this, but it's important that you guys set the right fonts so that users will be able to see symbols. Use font-family: 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol' in order to make Windows 7+ users see all the symbols.
