Civil parish status[edit]

Unfortunately we have conflicting information on the civil parish status of Minehead Without. The ONS reference cited is pretty clear that it *is* a civil parish. The national park reference cited just calls it a parish, and says that it is joined with Selworthy as a civil parish. However they also say there is no church, which presumably means it cannot be an eccliastical parish, so it is not clear what sort of parish they think it is.

I'm no great expert on civil parish administration, but from something I've read sometime, I think it is possible for two civil parishes to share a single parish council without actually merging the parishes. It may be that this is what the national park web site is trying to say, but inferences based on something I've read sometime is hardly WPworthy.

So I've chosen to go with the ONS, as I suspect they know more about what constitutes a civil parish than the national park. If anybody can find a resolving reference, please feel free to adjust appropriately. -- Starbois (talk) 18:43, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are right and it was one of the "parishes" (I believe civil) which were still on the wanted list of Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset (which you might like to join). A bit of digging leads me to Vision of Britain page about Minehead Without (based on ONS). This shows it (see relationships & changes) as a civil parish since 1894 but with boundary changes in 1916.— Rod talk 18:50, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
