KDE4's dolphin file browser also seems to offer a columns view - http://enzosworld.gmxhome.de/features.html . 80.4.12.138 (talk) 18:07, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Windows 7[edit]

I saw something like Finder's Miller Columns on Windows 7's Explorer. --ooscarr (talk) 13:50, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Independently Invented"?[edit]

The article states, "It is closely related to techniques used earlier in the Smalltalk browser, but was independently invented by Mark S. Miller in 1980 at Yale University." It also indicates "citation needed" at that point. I should think so. How one could "independently invent" something which by then had been around longer than 10 years and then have the result named after him is beyond me.

Clearly no patent could issue based on this so-called "independent invention." Call them what they are and give credit where it's due. They're Smalltalk Browser Columns or just Smalltalk Columns, Dshafer (talk) 00:08, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Commonly used term?[edit]

I've known of the term "cascading lists", but I wasn't aware of the term "Miller columns" until recently. Are there specific fields that commonly use the term "Miller columns" over the term "cascading lists"? And vice versa? Somerandomuser (talk) 17:15, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer: NeXT computer users, and by extension post-2001 Macintosh computer users. TooManyFingers (talk) 15:23, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Issues" section[edit]

I rewrote part of the first item in Issues to make it clearer to a general reader. I started to do something similar with the second item, but discovered that I can't even figure out what it means. I trust that it was obvious to the expert who wrote it, but I shouldn't have to be an expert to read it.

I don't really understand the second half of point 1 either; exactly how does using the keyboard do away with a visual difficulty? TooManyFingers (talk) 15:18, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removed reference to non-hierarchical browsers[edit]

There was a screenshot and reference to music players using Miller columns for browsing music via tags. I removed this as it doesn't seem to be Miller columns, since according to the definition here they are for browsing hierarchical tree structures, and the examples shown were for browsing via multiple separate non-hierarchical tag categories.
