Mark Waterson contributions[edit]

Mark Waterson, Mike's grandson, added a short section of personal commentary and family information. I was reluctant to pull it, (really enjoyed it actually) but it looks to me like not in the spirit of neutral point of view policies. Mark, if you read this, wikipedia is specifically not for contributions of personal knowledge or "original research." Everything here (in theory) should be information publicly available from other sources like magazines, newspapers, other reference works... outside, "authoritative" sources. I'd welcome suggestions from other folks of places for Mark to publish material like what he contributed. And I encourage Mark to keep it up, and to contribute more to wikipedia, of the sort of material wikipedia was meant for. Cheers!--Natcase (talk) 03:31, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Irish Gypsy descent"[edit]

In the two existing sources, Mainlynorfolk says: "They're partly of Irish gipsy descent" and Denselow in The Guardian says "... her part-Gypsy grandmother". I'm not sure how that permits us to change the wording to "Irish Traveller", even if the piped link directs to that article. I think we'd need some other source(s) that specifically say "Irish Traveller". I suggested this in my edit summary but was immediately reverted here with the edit summary "To quote the third paragraph of the Irish Traveller article "Although they are often incorrectly referred to as "Gypsies", Irish Travellers are not genetically related to the Romani people." sources 9 and 10 of the article back it up". I think that's WP:OR. Perhaps we need to remove the piped link to that article? Martinevans123 (talk) 23:05, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Same issue is relevant at Norma Waterson, of course. In this 1999 The Irish Times article Norma says: "We lived in the immigration area in Hull, it had settled gypsies like us, Irish, Italian, Indians, European Jews, Russians. We had the Catholic Church on one end of the street, the synagogue at the other and the pub in the middle!" This 1999 The Guardian article also says "Waterson's grandmother, an Irish gypsy who raised Norma, her brother Mike and her late sister Lal." The Times here says "... their Irish maternal grandmother who came from gypsy stock." The New York Times here says: "... a woman of Irish and Gypsy stock who sang traditional songs." So I think this now begs the question: is Irish Travellers an appropriate piped link, or should there be no link, or should the words be pipe-linked as "Irish Gypsy" or possibly "Irish-Gypsy"? Martinevans123 (talk) 12:39, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
