Biography Permisions[edit]

Hi I actually run the website mikesimpson2008.blogspot.com and the biographical information I pulled off it was written for use on that website and another by a Michigan House Democrats writer, who has given me explicit permission to use. —Preceding unsigned comment added by OMaolligain (talkcontribs) 03:42, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • This brings up 3 issues:
    • Issue #1: Permission must be verifiable, either with a GFDL-compatible license posted at the source or proof on file at the office through OTRS. Otherwise, Wikipedia cannot use the material.
    • Issue #2: Please familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's core content policies, especially neutral point of view. The biography is written like an advertisement. Even if the permission problem is solved, the article has to be rewritten. Wikipedia is not a soapbox.
    • Issue #3: Please be aware of Wikipedia policies on conflict of interest. Stated simply, you are not supposed to be doing this. • Gene93k (talk) 06:07, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requisite steps to assert copyright permission[edit]

We have to be very careful in handling copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. Along with your note, we need a little more to demonstrate that it is not a copyright violation.

  • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Sacred Heart Church (Phoenix, Arizona). (Please see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.)
  • Alternatively, you may alter the original website to include a note that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain. Once it is altered, leave a message at here with a link to where we can find that note.

Such steps are necessary because Wikipedia does not require verification of identity on account creation. By ensuring that only those with authority to release information do so, we protect our interests and yours, the copyright holder. Because of legal and ethical issues, copyright concerns must be addressed in a timely manner. Pending this release, the material is being removed. If permission is made official, it can be easily restored from the article's history. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:15, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
