Naming Conventions[edit]

24 November 2016

I updated the English named. They were named in English and the Slovenian versions are not supposed to be literal translations. See here https://union.ic.ac.uk/rcc/caving/slovenia/articles/2007-07-15-slovenia.html for example of use of Vrtnarija and Gardeners' World side by side. See the English/Slovenian drawn surveys here https://union.ic.ac.uk/rcc/caving/slovenia/articles/2014-07-12-slovenia.html for example of Torn T Shirt and Jama Strgane Srajce being used.

As the cave is Slovenian, it would make sense to use the original Slovenian names rather than an attempt at translating them into English. Eg. Kavkna Jama, Vrtnarija, Vilinska Jama, Tolminski Migovec, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slov01 (talkcontribs) 20:12, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's not what has been done till now. It was discussed at User talk:Doremo#Oplotnica. We have also translated e.g. Wild Lake. --Eleassar my talk 20:45, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Triglav-->Three Heads? Slov01 (talk) 21:12, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say this is a good analogy, as no-one translated 'Migovec'... 'Kavkna Jama' and 'Vilinska Jama' follow the same pattern as 'Wild Lake', whereas 'Vrtnarija' should stay untranslated. --Eleassar my talk 21:47, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mig System[edit]

Is the Mig System (Sistem Mig) an alternative name for the Migovec System or is it just a part of it? --Eleassar my talk 22:13, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes[edit]

In Slovenian a srajca is a shirt and a majica is a T-shirt, and so Jama Strgane Srajce is better glossed as "Torn Shirt Cave" than "Torn T-Shirt Cave." The noun vrtnarija refers to a nursery for garden plants; Garden World is a typical proper name for a business specializing in such services, and so Vrtnarija is better glossed as the generic "Garden Cave" (or "Nursery Cave") rather than the name of a store. If you read the cited references, you will be aware that the Slovenian names have been first translated from English into Slovenian. Double translating them back into English will, of course, lead to some strange effects. Please read the required references before reverting edits. Edits to improve formatting are warmly welcomed, but factual information should not be changed.Slov01 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 20:03, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If this is true (it contradicts your statement above from 16 August 2012), it would have been useful to mention this in your edit summary rather than opaquely writing "Factual additions" or undoing with no comment at all. The cited sources are not hotlinked and therefore cannot be read. Doremo (talk) 04:04, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
