Years? History?[edit]

When did this railroad begin?

When, in general, did railroads begin in Michigan?

These wikipedia articles on railroads lack years for when railroads were established in Michigan. Dogru144 15:56, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[1], specifically [2], has some information that should help there. --NE2 22:20, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

James Frederick Joy[edit]

For an article classed by Wikipedia as only 'Start' in quality, this is an awfully good beginning.

Besides the aforementioned comment, we also need to add the names of the players who took over this road from the state of Michigan and completed it. I'm not qualified to write this, but I believe they were headed by one of the more-important figures in the 3rd quarter of 19th American RR investing, Detroit lawyer (originally from--where else?--New England) James Frederick Joy, whose network came to be called the Joy System. He is said to have led a group of Boston capitalists who were, in turn, headed by RR investor John Murray Forbes.

I believe it was Joy's idea to push this road on to Chicago, amid designs to go further West.

Later, there was another man who owned stock in this RR, who was responsible for bringing it under New York Central control. He was a Commodore, but he weren't no Navy officer.

Ivanhoe, Indiana disaster[edit]

The Wikipedia article on the Michigan Central Railroad has a major omission: it does not describe the world's worst circus train disaster between two "extra" trains at Ivanhoe, Indiana on June 22, 1918. The leading train, operated by Michigan Central employees, under the on-board supervisor of a MC trainmaster, was a 26-car circus train, the last four of which were wooden Pullman type cars carrying several hundred Hagenbeck-Wallace circus crews and performers. This train was struck from behind by an empty passenger train (troop train) also operated by MC employees. Scores of circus people were killed instantly or were burned to death when the four last cars were splintered and set on fire. The ICC concluded the accident was caused by the following train's engineer falling asleep at the controls, running through a red block signal, and not heeding the warnings of the flagman from the lead train. My sources are "No Performances Today" by Warren A. Reeder, Jr. ISBN 0-9600590-1-6, Library of Congress Catalog number 72-86340; and United States Interstate Commerce Commission investigation report 532 at http://specialcollections.tasc.dot.gov/scripts.ws.dll?browse&rn=533 dated August 8, 1918.
