Notability[edit]

Kung fu raccoon (talk) 21:25, 7 December 2008 (UTC) I decided to write a page about Michael Hochberg for several reasons. First, there has been extensive coverage of him in secondary sources, such as an article written about his nature materials result which was published in nature photonics, [1]. Both are very prestigious journals. Other examples include [2] and [3] and [4].[reply]

Another reason is his involvement in founding Luxtera, which along with Kotura is one of the two big silicon photonics companies. In my opinion, building photonics components in a silicon platform is an important step, but I’m not quite sure how to back that up- if you google silicon photonics though, you get a ton of stuff.

Finally his work with slot waveguide and electrooptic polymer waveguides has been widely cited – while his original article was published in 2005 [5] it has since been cited 53 times. That is a lot when you consider that “electrooptic effects in silicon”, an article that is considered by many (well, me anyway) to be one articles that really got the field started was written in 1987 has been cited 406 times.

Admittedly, I would not expect the wider public to know or care about him, but within the field of silicon photonics he is someone notable.

One thing which would make him notable would be an notable award [[6]] like the airfoce award might be enough but needs a citation. He is one of many researchers and as long nobody stated in a notable journal that Hochberg is exceptional in the area ao research the article is always on the brink of notability.

The one and only thing this artikle really needs is some links from other articles of Wikipedia. If Hochberg is notable there must be some place where is name comes up in the Wikipedia.

But for now it is OK.--Stone (talk) 21:59, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From the standard of above, it would seem to me that he is notable, especially with his recent winning of the PECASE, which is a very high prestige award given to a limited number of scientists each year. Within the silicon photonics community, he is widely known, though I suppose that is a very qualitative statement. I would ask what the standard for notability is, if what Hochberg has is not enough. There are high profile awards, high prestige publications, and participation in the founding of a company that is now a very big player in silicon photonics, and all of these are verified in secondary sources. Can dissenting editors please state the nature of the issue? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.55.195.242 (talk) 10:51, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
