The Medusae Fossae Formation, also known as the Medusa Fossae[edit]

The two terms are not synonymous. Medusae Fossae is a physiographic feature name for a set of troughs in the Memnonia quadrangle. This feature was named by the International Astronomical Union in 1973 based on Mariner 9 images. (See de Vaucoleurs et al., 1975.) The Medusae Fossae Formation (Scott and Tanaka, 1986) is the name of a geological unit (formation) of uncertain origin that spans a wide swath across the highland-lowand boundary. Geological formation names are usually named after the location where the unit is best exposed (or first recogized), in other words, the type locality. This needs to be corrected. No geological formations on Mars![edit]

I propose not to use the prefix "geo-" when writing about Mars. The formations are planetological, not geological, as geo means Earth (γῆ (gē), Earth). Sae1962 (talk) 17:24, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

looking for discussion on the new findings announced as part of the current events on 1/18/24 and the "Water on Mars" wiki article. these ice water deposits here are promising for ISRU, making this an attractive site for further study
