Outdated Information and Wild Guesses[edit]

This article is undergoing substantial editing due to outdated information and a lack of detail. Some of the sources cited are unreliable and reflect 19th and early 20th century "wild guesses" about the Massawomeck (e.g., Seneca attacks in 1606, fleet of canoes on Lake Erie). Important historical detail is missing such as John Smith's 1608 encounter on Chesapeake Bay and Henry Fleet's 1632 account.

James Pendergast's The Massawomecks: Raiders and Traders should be a major source of information for this article. While his conclusions are disputed, Pendergast does provide a comprehension review of what is known about the Massawomeck.

Current thinking is that the Massawomeck were the protohistoric Monongehela of the Youghiogheny River and Monongahela River watersheds. Griffin's Sword (talk) 14:15, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
