Mass-Observation or Mass Observation ?[edit]

To hyphenate or not to hyphenate? That is the question. What is the correct answer and why? Nurg (talk) 23:22, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The original book published in 1939 says Mass-Observation, and that's how I've always seen it written. -taras (talk) 18:50, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The organisation was always known as Mass-Observation, the article should definitely be re-titled. --Noyster (talk) 16:24, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Mass-Observation is right, so please fix it. I have the book. I met Kathleen before she died. I have had conversations with her. Kathleen and Charles Madge's son married a cousin of mine. Kathleen would have been furious to have it spelt otherwise. And it's a feast of hyphens: "Mass-Observation Day-Surveys". P0mbal (talk) 21:53, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mass ObservationMass-Observation – (1) The original organisation, founded 1937, was always known as Mass-Observation - see publications listed in the main page, (2) Two other people agree, (3) The words without hyphenation could easily be read as a generic term like "mass production" or "mass hysteria". Counter-arguments might be (1) The hyphen slipped down behind a radiator at the University of Sussex some time after 1981, (2) Michael Hardy saw fit to remove the hyphen in this article title on 4 July 2011.
