Reference added, "hoax" tag removed[edit]

I have removed "hoax" and "unreferenced" tags and added a reference to a BBC news report. That cites an article in "Antiquity" which is clearly the primary source, but is not available on-line without a password. JohnCD (talk) 13:41, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dating of the find[edit]

The authors first referred to this work in French in 1999 and 2000, so it wasn't found in 2002. I've read that the piece was actually discovered in 1975, but only interpreted later.[1]. Fences and windows (talk) 21:14, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't an (on-wiki) {{hoax}}, but I have grave doubts that this qualifies as much more than a Rorschach type illustration of our built-in face-recognition software, just like the rest of the stuff at Art of the Middle Paleolithic, probably more projection on our part than actual figurative representation on the Neanderthals'. --dab (𒁳) 07:46, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't seen it, does someone have a useable photograph of the object for the page? Thanks. Randy Kryn 13:08 7 June 2014 (UTC)

There's a 2016 paper by Marquet et al. which dates the layer the mask was found in to 75ka - I'll add this onto the page with a source. Blueskies2021 (talk) 09:15, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
