Created Individual Article as discussed on Olsen Twins discussion page

Majority agreed to separate articles whilst keeping Olsen Twins article. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mary-Kate_and_Ashley_Olsen#separate_pages.3F --Rosario 04:24, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to see a citation for the information about her arrest alongside Christian Bale for conspiracy to murder. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.89.168.64 (talk) 22:53, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Merger proposal

72.50.123.45 (talk · contribs) has added {{merge}} to this article and Ashley Olsen, in each case proposing a merge with the other and not with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. What sense does this make?

  • Since the article Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen already exists, if we were to have a separate, single article for the two as individuals, what would it be called?
  • The whole point of individuals having articles is to cover them as individuals. Only a few months ago, these individual articles were created to address this desire. Merging such articles would break this individuality. As a general rule, where a single article is about two or more people, it is to cover them as a group, not to cover each as an individual.

-- Smjg (talk) 23:12, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Unless Mary-Kate and Ashley spend their entire careers playing twins, it only makes sense to have an article for each person. Wanderer57 (talk) 18:26, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

They are still planning on making some movies together but very few. I think it wouldn't be a good idea to merge them just keep them separate. Brycemoose (talk) 18:26, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

If they do more as a duo, then this would go under the article we already have for the duo. This is distinct from having a single article covering the two as individuals, which is what the proposer seems to be proposing and what I'm saying doesn't make sense. -- Smjg (talk) 15:07, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Anyone who thinks some sort of merge would be a good idea, please explain why. Wanderer57 (talk) 16:53, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

"Fashion icon"?

...and has quickly become a fashion icon in her own right.

Fashion icon? That's a pretty strong term to use. I'm going to remove it, unless someone can provide a valid reason to keep it. --DearPrudence (talk) 03:56, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

As a week has gone by without any protest, I'm taking down the sentence. --DearPrudence (talk) 02:45, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

IMDb as a reference

Regarding one of the recent edits: IMDb is not a reliable source for that sort of thing. It is user-edited, just like Wikipedia, and therefore cannot be used alone as a reference, at least not for biographical details like "She suffers from ADD." If you can find another source, like an interview in which she talks about it, then add it in with the new reference. IMDb biographies are no more reliable than a Wikipedia article that doesn't list its sources. --DearPrudence (talk) 22:40, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Kingsley quote

On her wiki page it says. "She appears in the 2008 film The Wackness as Union. At the Sundance Film Festival, co-star and Academy Award-winner Sir Ben Kingsley praised her by saying "Mary-Kate's portrayal of this girl is perfect — she's hysterical. She's a pro. It makes sense. She's been in this business a lot longer than I have." But if you look at Ben Kingley's wiki page it says "Film and television career: Kingsley's first film role was a supporting turn in Fear Is the Key, released in 1972. Kingsley continued starring in bit roles in both film and television, including a role as Ron Jenkins on the soap opera Coronation Street from 1966-1967 and regular appearances as a defence counsel in the long-running British legal programme Crown Court. He found fame only years later, starring as Mohandas Gandhi in the Academy Award-winning film Gandhi in 1982, his best-known role to date.[9] The audience also agreed with the critics, and Gandhi was a box-office success. Kingsley won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal.[9]" Which is way before Mary Kate Olsen was even born! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Kingsley

Duplicative photos

Does the article really call for two photos of Olsen, taken by the same photographer at the same event, both apparently added to the article by that photographer?

It is a bit stupid, they're the same photo! We should delete the duplicate photo. 59.154.42.132 (talk) 11:00, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Public image

This section isn't NPOV, plus it only discusses fur. I am sure there is more to their image than fur and ad hominem attacks. 98.160.106.189 (talk) 11:17, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Status of apartment in which Heath Ledger was found dead

Also, the source cited for "On January 22, 2008 actor Heath Ledger was found dead in a New York Apartment owned by Olsen [7]." clearly states that Ms. Olsen did NOT own the apartment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.115.239.10 (talkcontribs) 23:09, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Corrected. AgneCheese/Wine 23:09, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
The text of that particular source has been changing almost as rapidly as our Heath Ledger article. A few minutes ago the same source clearly identified it as Mary-Kate's pad, citing the police report. Bear with us. — CharlotteWebb 23:13, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
I added information on Olsen's representative's refutation of the police report rather than deleting it altogether. Even if incorrect, the fact that the NYPD announced it is still newsworthy.--Ahecht (talk) 23:22, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
for how long? about a week? it seems to me to be undue weight to include such a thing. --Fredrick day (talk) 23:32, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Regardless of whether you decide to keep it or not, "Manhattan" is spelled wrong in that part of the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.96.8.151 (talk) 23:56, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't see the reason why we mention the death of Heath Ledger, as a part of Mary-Kate's personal life. A phone call doesn't have to mean anything. Shouldn't it be removed? -Jo —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.233.187.172 (talk) 22:46, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

The fact that Ledger's massage therapist called Olsen to find out what to do when she found Ledger dead, does NOT need to be included in this article. I don't mean to come across as enraged, but someone has passed away and it's not a time to give Olsen Popularity PR. That information is not notable to her biography, nor is it notable to her career, not is it considerably notable to her personal life. They were not dating, I've never even seen a picture of them together, nor have I seen either of those people verbally speak of each other. It's not to say they weren't friends, or even close friends, but this information shouldn't be included in a Wikipedia entry based on Olsen's career and selected personal life. If they had of been an official couple, perhaps the circumstances would be different.--Theguywiththeinfo (talk) 09:12, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Strangely enough, that phone call has entered pop culture -- please see http://www.nypost.com/delonas/2008/01/01272008.jpg which cannot be understood unless you knew of the massage therapist's seemingly inappropriate call to Ms. Olsen. I think that a brief mention in this article would be relevant -- Ðntalk 17:54, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
It's not seemingly relevant to her biography though, is it? I don't think it needs to be added to this particular page - possibly add it to Ledger's page, but not Olsen's. I mean, if information about the Westboro Baptist Churches attacks on Ledger are being removed because they are not relevant enough to his death, why should a phone call to Mary-Kate Olsen be included? It just seems like she is being attached to the story for no real reason. Even information about Ledger's close friend, an actress named Elissa Sursara, who is ALSO being attacked by Westboro Baptist Church for being his friend is being removed despite the fact she was called by Ledger's family and Williams immediately, I really don't understand why a phone-call to Mary-Kate Olsen is being included as vital information, at least not on this particular Wikipedia page. If it needs mentioning, which I really don't think it does need to be added, it should be added at Ledger's page in the 'Death' section. --Theguywiththeinfo (talk) 07:21, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

this is a very bias article. laughable. "is responsible for her sister, ashley starting to smoke." ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.52.61.123 (talk) 09:25, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Unclear quote

Hi, I found the quote ' When asked if there was a specific reason for her leaving NYU, she replied, "I think we can all guess."[29]' to be misleading... The source makes it clear that she was referring to Paris Hilton dating her BF, but this article does not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.91.156.31 (talk) 12:25, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Fraternal twins

The Olsen twins are fraternal. Numerous reliable sources note this. This is something that is changed frequently in this article. Here are some sources saying the twins are fraternal: Slate [1], People [2], and Huffington Post [3], among many other sources. Pretty please, stop changing this in the article. Safehaven86 (talk) 21:43, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

It is in the Birth and family section, where it belongs, though I still haven't seen a source that conclusively says that they are fraternal or identical. I've even seen some that say that they may be both. --Musdan77 (talk) 04:43, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Yep, it just gets changed fairly regularly by IPs. In the Slate article linked above, there's a quote from the twins' father saying a doctor told him the twins are fraternal. Safehaven86 (talk) 05:59, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Their parents were told they weren't identical (monozygotic) because they did not share a placenta, however, this is not always the case.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin#Degree_of_separation says: "Normally, twins have two separate (di- being a numerical prefix for two) chorions and amniotic sacs, termed Dichorionic-Diamniotic or "DiDi". It occurs in almost all cases of dizygotic twins (except in very rare cases of fusion between their blastocysts[38]) and in 18–36%[39] (or around 25%[38]) of monozygotic (identical) twins."
The only way to be sure is to be genetically tested, which their father admits didn't happen: "We were just told by the doctors" that the girls were fraternal, says their dad, Dave Olsen, when reached today by phone. "We never thought about it much. They are good kids." ~ http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2011/08/24/mary_kate_and_ashley_olsen_can_you_tell_them_apart_.html

Equestrian career?

I'm questioning this recent entry in the article, under the heading "Equestrian Career":

Mary-Kate began horseback riding when she was 6 years old.[1] During her time at Campbell Hall she was a member of the school's equestrian team.[2] Mary-Kate temporarily quit riding when she and Ashley moved to New York City. Mary-Kate eventually returned to riding because she missed the sport.[3] Today Mary-Kate is a competitive equestrian.[4] In 2013 her horse Marvelous won the 38th Hampton Classic Horse Show. He was ridden by James Anderson.[5]

References

Is she doing this professionally? One of the articles (from Yahoo!) identifies it as a "hobby", so I'm not sure whether we should be noting this alongside her careers in acting and fashion design.

This addition was part of a set of edits made by IPs on May 19–20 which actually disorganized the article (e.g., "Health issues" moved out of its proper section), so I'm restoring the article prior to that point. On the equestrian topic, I suggest some discussion here as to its noteworthiness and the reliability of the sources cited. I noticed Daily Mail in the group of citations and remembered from elsewhere about it being a tabloid circulation not suitable for BLPs. MPFitz1968 (talk) 06:56, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
