Questions of "Cn" requests and industry promotions[edit]

Responding to a "Cn," I sought a citation, rather than just erasing the sentence. I found what I expected, a dozen announcements in trade journals. At last, I found one in a publication that probably had some editorial standard, but changed the existing text to note that Marriott "said" it was its 500th property. I can't imagine that any journalist would fact-check that claim, by finding evidence of the 499 previous claimed properties. My presumption is that this is an issue of little general interest, but what Marriott might find advantageous/promotional. I wonder how much this and similar articles are strongly influenced by the corporations or individuals they describe? I also wonder how many editors focus on leaving "Cn's' rather than doing the research they purport to consider useful, perhaps only to pad the number of edits they make with posting inane requests?
