Confederate Brigadier General William Montague Browne (1823-1883) of County Mayo according to Ezra J. Warner's Generals In Gray {.p.368 note 74} had a unconfirmed report that reportably he was a nephew of Earl of Sligo. However on website Find a Grave W.M.Browne father is given as D. Geoffrey Browne MP -related to the above ? {For reference only}
- The closest I can find is that Margaret Browne, daughter of Hon. George Browne and granddaughter of the 1st Earl of Altamont, married a "Dominick Geoffrey Browne" (d. 1826), who had a son named "Dominick Browne", 1st Baron Oranmore and Browne and sometime MP for Mayo. However, Burke's Peerage does not list William Montague Browne among the issue of any of either the Sligo or Oranmore Brownes, and it covers the correct time period. Interestingly, "Confederate Military History" contradicts Findagrave and reports W.M. Browne as being born in Dublin. This supposed connection strikes me as highly suspect. Has anyone thought of the possibility that the said William Montague Browne was disinherited or even possibly an illegitimate son of the said Dominik Geoffrey Browne. Abrowne123 13:14, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- The William Montague Browne article linked to a news story where Sir Robert Ricketts (by process of elimination, the 7th Baronet of that name- no other Sir Robert Ricketts existed at that time; furthermore another story- now linked on that article- clarifies his age, and corroborates Sir Robert's identity) claimed to be the nephew (in a more in-depth article from the Washington Post, included in the article as mentioned above, it clarifies GREAT-GREAT-nephew) of William Montague Browne. Inspecting Sir Robert's ancestry gives the following: his mother, Lillian Helen Gwendoline, was daughter of Arthur Manley Hill, who married Alice Honoria, shown in birth records to be the daughter of James Arthur Browne. Biographical details for this James Arthur Browne (of Browne Hall, county Mayo) give HIS father as Colonel Dominick Browne (obituary found in the Illustrated London News, vol. 22, of Jan. 1853, he being born 1776), who married Augusta Louisa, daughter of the Hon. Colonel Arthur Browne, M.P. for county Mayo. The Washington Post article has Sir Robert Ricketts mentioning William Montague Browne's origins in Mayo, but says he was the fifth son; other sources fail to corroborate this, with the aforementioned obituary giving his fifth son's name as Henry, who fought in Hungary. No source I have uncovered includes amongst these sons a William Montague. - The relationship with the Sir Robert Ricketts (if correct) means that William Montague Browne must be a sibling of James Arthur Browne of Browne Hall, Mayo or a sibling of his wife, Emily Alice Browne of Newtown, Roscommon (a cadet of the Brownes of Altamont). The children of the 1st Baron Oranmore and Browne were born in a mix of England and Ireland. A search of ancestry.com for a William Montague Browne (born approx. 1823) in Ireland or England reveals no leads. Montague is a name that references the Brownes of the Neale/Kilmaine/Sligo/Altamont, and not the Brownes of Castlemacgarret/Oranmore and Browne. For me, the most likely possibility is a descent from a sibling (full or half) of Emily Alice Browne of Newtown and Roxburgh House, Roscommon: https://www.stirnet.com/genie/data/british/bb4fz/brown07.php I have not been able to find a published pedigree of this branch of Brownes as yet (although some siblings are published on the internet with no mention of a William Montague Browne).
