Redskins versus Redhawks[edit]

Changed "offensive" to "controversial". There is not consensus on the use of that word as a mascot being offensive. The Washington Redskins, for example, still use it. The school changed it to avoid controversy and avoid even the potential for offense.67.167.248.233 (talk) 16:07, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I must respectfully disagree as an alum and as a former staff member. Marist has had controversy before, and has let it roll by. At issue was the fact that the staff and administration began to feel that the school could not claim to be a Catholic school while sporting a logo that (factually) a certain percentage of the population felt was racially offensive. I was a teacher there the year the mascot changed, and this is exactly what we were told by the administration. Were we lied to? Perhaps, but I doubt it. The school would have had a much easier time with the alumni if they had claimed that they were being pressured. At the time there really was no external pressure to change (the school hadn't been picketed or legally threatened as other schools had). At the end of the day, I think the school simply felt that even if some people didn't think the mascot was offensive, there were enough people who did, and that it would be the right thing to do as as community of faith. I won't revert this yet, but I think that this is not a truthful statement as to what happened. LonelyBeacon (talk) 04:00, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think we agree. There certainly are people who find "Redskins" offensive. But I don't think the word "offensive" is the best word to use in an encyclopedic context. Or at least in the way that sentence was constructed. I think to reach the threshold for using offensive in this context, the offense would have to be held more universally. I cited the Washington Redskins here as an example of the non universalness of the feeling. I do agree that Marist held itself to a higher standard in changing it, and the change served as instructive to the MHS community. Maybe there is a way to change the article to reflect more nuance?67.167.248.233 (talk) 16:07, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OT- I was there 1989-1993- Would I know you? 67.167.248.233 (talk) 16:07, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was a member of the Class of 1989 ... you might have. LonelyBeacon (talk) 20:04, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Steve Chamraz[edit]

I removed this individual from the alumni section. There is a reference, but it does not show him being an alumnus of this school. If someone can find a reference showing him being an alumnus, please re-add with a proper ref and cite. LonelyBeacon (talk) 20:34, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
