Operetta or musical?[edit]

Should this be designated an operetta or musical? The NYT articles both refer to it as a musical.4meter4 (talk) 20:19, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen or heard it. But it is Kalman, and from the description in Time, it seems to be an "operetta" style piece. Although the NY Times "calls" it a musical, I believe that they did not make this distinction in describing operetta-style pieces. I'd call it an "operetta", and write it up using the opera project guidelines and cats, unless it is clearly not. I can only see the abstract for the NY Times articles. How do they "describe" the score? Do they use words like "romantic" and "sweeping"? Those were operetta words. Cole Porter, on the other hand, was described as "fresh", "light", "snappy", etc. BTW, it doesn't matter that much. I think that clearly The Vagabond King and The Desert Song were operettas, but we treat them as musicals because a former member of the opera project insisted on it. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:24, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
