Identity of adoptive father[edit]

George McCracken, "The Villa and Tomb of Lucullus at Tusculum," American Journal of Archaeology 46.3 (1942), pp. 325-340, here p. 326, identifies the scholar M. Terentius Varro as the adoptive father of our M. Terentius Varro Lucullus, apparently based on the RE (Realencyclopaedia) article for Varro Lucullus, s.v. Licinius Lucullus no. 109 (25, 414-419). This is probably not true because Varro was born in the same year, 116 BC. Der Kleine Pauly s.v. and apparently Arkenberg 1993, 333 therefore speak of adoption by an (unknown) M.
