I was wondering who was Livia's father because of a reference to him in the celebrated Book/TV series "I Claudius". Robert Graves,(the Author),has done a good job of recreating the "feel"(I imagine)of post republican Rome but never explained whom Livia's father was! This is an important piece of information as it explains Livia's motives and her ruthlessness, clearing the path for her anti-Republican son, Tiberius to become Emperor! Just before her death she summons her Grand-son, the 4th Emperor Claudius and the infamous "Caligula" to a private dinner and revells that it has been "fore-told" that they both are to assume the rank of Emperor. She makes them both swear to do all in there power, once the prophacies are fore-filled, to make her a "Godess". Caligula is blackmailed but Claudius,incredulous, readily agrees but with One Proviso! She must divulge all she has done and hold nothing back. Claudius assures her he doesnot do this to seek revenge but simply so he will finally discover exactly what went on behind the scenes. After he has finished he asks her the question, WHY? "I never forgot who my father was!" I've tried for many years (well off and on)to discover this cryptic answers meaning. As related in the article on M.Livius Drusus Claudians, he fought against Octavius and Agrippa at Actium. That She could "maintain the Rage" for all those years beggars belief but is a good as any reason to explain her actions. Thank you for the Article.
