Untitled[edit]

Marathon des Dunes is a sporting event, which takes place in the Algerian Sahara desert. It was first held in 2000 and it's exact location and course changes from year to year, going from West to extreme south of Algeria.

The event covers the entire Marathon distance of 42 km, but split over 3 consecutive days of 14KM per day and allows the competitors to complete the course freestyle (walking, running or any other unaided way of movement). The terrain varies from tarmac, rough terrain to sand dunes which makes it a challenge despite the short distance ran per day. The vent runs every year from the 26th Dec - 1st Jan ending with New Years Eve celebrations, the time of year in the Algerian Sahara boasts changing temperatures of up to 25 c during daylight and dropping down to -2 at night.

The marathon also features a cultural program, which includes daily excursions to local museums, historical sights and religious temples such as old Zaouia (Pronounced ZAWIYA) and hermitages (Christian chapels found in the Algerian Sahara founded by Charles de Foucault). Entertainment is provided every evening with local folk bands performing for the participants every night (local Saharan music ranges from Gnawa to Diwan or Targui), local food tasting through the renowned generosity of the people of the Sahara as they host walimas from couscous and gallette to tea and dates for all the athletes and participants.

Cash prizes and trophies are awarded to the top 5 athletes and New Year celebrations are held under the stary Saharan Skies and around bon fires.

The 2008/2009 edition was held in the region of Bechar on the Algerian-Moroccan border. The 10th Edition of the year 2010/2011 was held in the same region of Bechar but in a diffrent town, Taghit was the host town.
