Ideas for expansion[edit]

There is still a lot that can be written in this article. Ideas:

  • The impact and reaction when Madiba first started wearing the shirts
  • The popularity of the shirts in South Africa and overseas
  • The (possible) effect they have had on dress codes, particularly formalwear

The biggest problem is trying to find reliable sources for this info, and not to draw inferences or analysis from a conglomerate of random articles, which would constitute original research. While there are plenty of articles that mention Mandela's wearing of the shirt in passing, I have not yet found an article on the shirt itself or on a specific reaction his wearing the shirt at say, some sort of formal occassion. Google does not bring up much of direct relevance. Perhaps better luck can be found by searching the South African news websites IOL and News24. Zunaid 13:43, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i have a question. i always thought these shirts were inspired by javanese batik. is that correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.2.61.69 (talk) 19:36, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

They are not INSPIRED BY Javanese Batik... They ARE Javanese Batik.... The first time Madiba wore Javanese Batik Shirt is in 1994 APEC conference (head of delegation usually get 1 batik shirt for certain occasion). Eventually, he loved it very much and wear it a lot after that conference... So who is this Buirski guy? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.59.180.176 (talk) 09:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does this mean the shirts are made in Java, or just use Javanese methods? It should be stated in the article. A correction: batik and print are two different processes, so if batik is the process involved, the word "print" should not be used. EEye (talk) 10:43, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
