Current personnel numbers[edit]

The number of personnel each country has sent for both military & civilian positions needs to be updated. I update the total for each section as provided on http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/missions/monuc/facts.html. Earthsound 22:41, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Creation's date of the mission[edit]

Article says that the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo was created by Resolution 1291 of the UN Security Council, on February 24, 2000. It seems to be false, because we can find, quite three months earlier, another resolution (1273, on November 30, 1999, see French version of the resolution, item 4.) which seems to prove that the mission was already existing, and maybe earlier more (but without any official name approved by the Security Council). Hégésippe | ±Θ± 06:59, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Indeed! MONUC was created by Resolution 1258 (1999) para. 8, authorizing the deployment of up to 90 United Nations military liaison personnel, together with the necessary civilian, political, humanitarian and administrative staff. Resolution 1273 (1999) extended the mandate of the United Nations military liaison personnel deployed under paragraph 8 of resolution 1258 (1999). With Resolution 1279 (1999) para. 4, the Security Council decided that the personnel authorized under its resolutions 1258 (1999) and 1273 (1999) [...] shall constitute the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC). Update[edit]

This page is always in a constant need of updates, so you could always give us a hand, like Earthsound. Thank you for your help!--Andronicus92 19:57, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's pretty tricky tracking the troop numbers. Although they are contained in the UN Secretary General's reports back to UN Security Council, they're a pain to dig out. Anyhow, added UN Infobox, per the UN Portal's "to do" list, which down the line could make updating that kind of figure a little easier. Tlongers (talk) 07:43, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting the Page[edit]

I think the page might benefit from being split into separate pages for MONUC and MONUSCO, given the changes in mandate, strategy, tactics and force structure. This would obviously require some pretty serious expansion. Be interested to hear others' thoughts. --Scrooge (talk) 12:38, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the CongoMONUSCOWikipedia:COMMONNAME. The current article title is rather long. I suggest we use its acronym which is equally well known. Ali Fazal (talk) 20:57, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support although I think a restructuring would be appropriate, possibly per year or group of years... That could include the idea that MONUC was for year x to year y, then MONUSCO from year y - present. The Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) is currently a separate page. I'm not sure what the policy/guidelines on that are, but as more information comes into the public domain, I intend to update that page substantially. Facts[edit]

I read with interest the point that says: "Between 21 and 29 August, heavy fighting outside Goma left 57 rebels, 10–23 government soldiers, 14 civilians and one Tanzanian U.N. peacekeeper dead. 720 government soldiers and 10 U.N. peacekeepers were also wounded.[46][47][48][49]" I have NO IDEA what the source is for the rebel casualties, as I was on the ground then as part of the FIB. There is no way that there were only 57 rebel casualties. Our estimates exceed that number wounded and in the various rebel field hospitals, never mind how many had been killed directly. MONUSCOUnited Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo – Long it may seem, but it was recently moved to the current title by just one "support" vote, excluding the nominator's. One person suggested using both the proposed and the current title. The closing administrator missed that and didn't relist it. As for claims of being "commonly used", the whole proposed name must have been used by the press most of the time instead of (pronounced mohn-nuhs-ko). I don't know; maybe authors and/or editors must have copied and pasted the whole long title. Besides commonality, not an average reader would type either title. Who else here knows what "MONUSCO" is already? George Ho (talk) 09:06, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • oppose - I'm not sure what the argument is here. MONUSCO is certainly the most common name here, regardless of whether the nominator has heard of the topic before. It's billed above the full name on the top of the official website and then used throughout he site. There is also no ambiguity about another topic this could stand for, obviously. And hell, it seems to be the name above the doorway to the building. The first equivalents popping to mind are probably UNESCO and UNICEF.--Yaksar (let's chat) 16:22, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • oppose: The French might be a common name, but tbh I think it's the same as NATO - the acronym is so much more common for obvious reasons...—Brigade Piron (talk) 18:00, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • same edit as last time:
Suggest, the even longer form: "MONUSCO - United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo". The html title (search engine title) of the official site (http://monusco.unmissions.org/) is found in searches including MONUSCO AND "United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo". The long title would remain intelligible in contexts such as in Category:United Nations Security Council mandates. Gregkaye 21:36, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Oppose: The acronym is well known. Ali Fazal (talk) 19:09, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion addition to MONUSCO controversies[edit]

Regarding the section about MONUSCO controversies, I quote from another Wikipedia article, about religion in the DRC: "It was reported in 2019 that the Pakistani contingent of the United Nations MONUSCO force was reported to have financed the construction of new mosques in the region, contributing to an "islamisation" of Eastern Congo." Original reporting source: Braeckman, Colette (7 December 2019). "L'Est du Congo, nouvelle cible du combat djihadiste?". Le Carnet de Colette Braeckman. Le Soir.
