City Vote on Alcohol Sales[edit]

The constant revisions to this section do not conform with Wikipedia's policy on POV. Lets please come to a consensus on how this section should read. I understand its a hightly contentious issue, but Wikipedia is not the place for this. I feel like the edit made by myself was truly neutral, but if you disagree, please explain yourself here.Colehowardatx 04:37, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aug. 15th, 2007 update: Newest Update The latest news article regarding the prohibition petition.... the county commissioners' court found nothing wrong with the petition that would keep it off of the November ballot so not the prohibition measure is now officially on the Nov. Ballot for the city of Lumberton. I have changed the mainpage to reflect the information stright from this article. http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=18696594&BRD=2287&PAG=461&dept_id=512588&rfi=6

The article is biased as relates to two points.

1. "These proponents are primarily businessmen who stand to gain some profits from potential alcohol sales"

Completely false. The petitions to legalize alcohol were started by Cliff Simoneaux and Dannis Robinson, neither of whom are business men. Cliff works for a hospital and Dannis works in a steel plant.

2. "The opponents of David Bellow's petition have recently attempted to not allow the people of Lumberton a chance to vote by trying to stop the issue from going on the ballot alhough the Secretary of State has stated that the issue must be put on the ballot because the petition had recieved the minimum number of valid signatures."

This statement has not been verified. On Aug. 1, 2007 Elizabeth Hanshaw Winn at the Secretary of State's office sent the following;

"Please be advised that the Office of the Secretary of State has not issued any official opinion regarding the legality of a local option liquor petition for the city of Lumberton. We can confirm that telephone calls were answered by various members of our legal staff in response to questions raised from the Hardin County area."

Change of city limits[edit]

I have noticed that the city limit along the southern border of Lumberton has been extended by approximately one mile in a southerly direction, from US-69/287 and US-96 north of the end of the Eastex Freeway to the northern sideline of Mitchell Road (the city limit signs are on the frontage roads, not on the freeway), and on FM 3513 to the northern sideline of Mitchell Road. Is there anything official from the City of Lumberton about this change, and its accompanying change of area? I don't know when the change took place, whether it was before or after April 1, the date of the 2010 U.S. Census. Ed (talk) 04:22, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Addendum: The new city limit signs were installed on Eastex on 9 December 2010 on the bridge over Mitchell Road.Ed (talk) 04:57, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
