Provenza's First Name[edit]

There seems to be a persistent belief that Provenza's first name is Salvatore. In actuality, to date, Provenza has no first name. As recently as the current season, we saw his business card listing his name as Detective Lt. Provenza, with no first name. Moreover, his listing on the TNT website includes no first name, and the TNT press releases for each episode identify him solely as Det. Lt. Proveza in the cast list. I'm not sure where anyone is getting Sal from, since there's no reference attached, but as an unverifiable name, it does not belong on the page.

It should also be noted that until the end of Summer Series 3, Commander Taylor had no first name until it was finally seen as Brenda watched him on television, speaking to reporters. Producer James Duff has made a game of slowly revealing characters' first names. For anyone familiar with British police procedurals, Duff has drawn some inspiration for his characters from two notable series: Inspector Morse and Prime Suspect. Provenza has several Morse-like characteristics: white hair, fussy quirks, a curmudgeonly personality, a seemingly lazy approach that hides brilliance, and no first name.
