Sail[edit]

The "sail" of this animal has nearly no anatomical similarities to the elongated vertebral spines of Dimtrodon or Edaphosaurus. The spines of this animals were very thin and with a round to oval diameter and very fragile, and it is very probable that there was indeed only skin over them. But the elongated offshoots of Lotosaurus´ vertebras were very compact and strong, much longer than wide and in fact nothing more than elongated parts of the vertebras, without any further modifications. Similar in Edaphosaurus and Spinosaurus, this animals had no skinny sail, but more some sort of narrow muscle-covered hump on the back.
