Livery and Maintenance (also known as Retaining) was a potential threat to the state when the liveried retainers became in number, training, and function a private army. Laws were passed against it at the beginning of the Sixteenth Century, though in practice it was tolerated and licensed where the throne felt it supported order. It's certainly not great art but as you note it does give information relevant to that particular section of the article. This type of naive illustration is known as a "schematic diagram" and is frequently used to illustrate a collection of representations where comparative detail is more important than style. This particular example is part of a series which appears in a number of Wikipedia articles dealing with historic French Army regiments.Buistr (talk) 21:05, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
