Freedom of the City[edit]

The legend of a photograph of the Duke, states, "The Duke of Connaught inspecting Guard of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, April, 1918, at Winchester, England, on the occasion of receiving the Freedom of the City." Who is the recipient of the Freedom of the City, would this be the Royal Newfoundland Regiment or the Duke? SEE source: The Veteran, 1923-1924, vol. 3 July 1923. Pg 14. I found an earlier publication of the same photograph with a slightly different version of the legend that indicates the Duke was the recipient. However, it would make sense that the Newfoundland Regiment was the recipient as they were relocating the 2nd Battalion to Hazeley Down (outside Winchester) in July 1918. FROM: Veteran magazine. April 1921. Pg 34. http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/compoundobject/collection/cns_veteran/id/3647/rec/17 “The Duke of Connaught inspecting Guard of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment April, 1918, at Winchester, England on the occasion of his receiving the freedom of the city. Colonel B.J. Barton, D.S.O. is seen on the left of the Duke. The famous regimental mascot Sable Chief is in the foreground.” Klossoke (talk) 11:59, 18 July 2017 (UTC)klossoke[reply]

Not sure if this month of April 1918 is correct. Lt. Col. B.J. Barton, D.S.O., (identified in legend) did not officially begin command of 2nd Battalion Royal Newfoundland Regiment until June 1918. But it is possible he was with the Bn prior to the official start of his command. Source: ROYAL NEWFOUNDLAND REGT. Res. En. Lt.-Col. B. J. Barton, D.S.O. (Res/ of Off.), Yorks. L.I.
