Douglas Adams[edit]

I would contest Douglas Adams as belonging on this list. Yes, his works contain satire, but on the whole, his works generally poke fun at everything which is not satire. Satire chooses to exagerate or otherwise ridicule some particular aspecto of life (usually society) for the purpose of infuencing the oppinions of others. Douglas Adams is hysterical, but not a Satirist.

I'll go on record to say at least some of Adams' work is satire-- his treatment of the human belief in self-importance/exceptionalism is brilliant. I think it's arguably the central comic conceit of the Hitchhiker's series-- humans are continually ridiculed as unimportant and expendable("from a backwater of the galaxy", "mostly harmless", less intelligent than mice/dolphins, earth demolished because of a bureaucratic oversight). I won't add the guy back as I'm not much of an editor, but felt this point may be salient

Sort lists[edit]

How about sorting the lists? Context is more important than era. We should, at the very least, distinguish authors from, say, directors. I don't see why we couldn't gather up the playwrights, then the television personas, then the cartoonists, and sort each chronologically.

List overlong[edit]

Let's trim this list. As I see it, the are two problems here:

1) It seems that anyone who is considered a humorist (and sometimes, simply, anyone who has ever told a joke) is considered a satirist here. We should only include people whose work predominantly falls into this category. I would suggest a narrower definition; for instance, I would consider Garrison Keillor's work to be gentle ribbing, not satire. As the page for satire explains, works in this genre are "an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves." Keillor is not attacking his fellow Minnesotans. I would say that at least half of the present list should be eliminated on similar grounds. There are a lot of people on this list I don't know, but I would bet the same can be said of them. Some of the entries on this list feature critique without humor (such as Mad Men), which, again, is not satire.

2) We need to be more selective about who is considered notable. For instance, do we really need every member The Chaser?

An additional problem, specifically within the list of films: There are a number of films here which are cited as satire, when they are in fact parody. For instance: Not Another Teen Movie doesn't satirize teen films, but parodies them. Spinal Tap doesn't satrize rockumentaries, it parodies them (while it is satirizing the musci industry). Casino Royal doesn't satirize James Bond films, it parodies them. Italics[edit]

Every single one of the titles of works here need to be in italics, per WP:ITALICS. It seems to be done up to a point, then fails right at about "List of satirists and satires#Notable satires in contemporary popular culture" —Prhartcom (talk) 22:44, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why isn’t Randy Newman on here[edit]
