#20 R. Wickham[edit]

R Wickham was born on 12 November 1886 in London he gained his licence on a Sommer Biplane at Brooklands. I think this is Richard Francis Ernest Wickham who was born in Twickenham (Brentford Registration District) in 1886. He was in the RNAS and later the RAF and died as a Squadron Leader on 28 June 1945 and buried at Halton aged 59. What I can't prove is a connection between R F E Wickham and the R Wickham of licence #20. Any help or ideas. Thanks. MilborneOne (talk) 15:17, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RFE Wickham was appointed Pilot Officer (no. 74578) RAF on 3 Oct. 1939 on the outbreak of WWII (London Gazette). If he had served in the RNAS before, surely he would have gone in at a higher rank than P.O. Odd. --TraceyR (talk) 18:06, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
REF Wickham became a member of the R.Ae.C. 21 Sep. 1910 on the same day that R.Wickham received his brevet! Circumstantial evidence, but fairly conclusive. In 1912 he was in the USA, but was back in the UK as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant in the RNAS. --TraceyR (talk) 22:59, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Capt. R. Wickham attended the dinner honouring the First Hundred certificate holders. Capt. in 1920, P.O. in 1939? Possible but is it likely? I'm still looking. --TraceyR (talk) 10:02, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, both Wickhams!! would have been 53 in 1939 so it may have been a special duties appointment, still looking! MilborneOne (talk) 11:28, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There are three entries for RFEW here; this one is interesting one because it's dated 12/11/1886 - was there another RFE Wickham? A look at the 1911 census returns reveal one RFEW: HOUSEHOLD, Last name(s)=WICKHAM, First name(s)=RICHARD FRANCIS ERNEST, Sex=M, Birth year=1887, Age in 1911=24, District=Ware, County=Hertfordshire. The more you look, the more you find! perhaps #20 was already in the USA for the 1911 census. --TraceyR (talk) 12:03, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Eureka!

WICKHAM, Flight Lieutenant Richard Francis Ernest - (Cavalier of the ) Order of the Crown (Italy) - awarded as per London Gazette dated 11 August 1917. Canadian connections not clear. DHist cards say he was educated at Winchester, served two years in Winchester OTC and two years in 14th Middlesex Regiment. Obtained Royal Aero Club Certificate No.20 at Brooklands, 20 September 1910. In 1912 he was doing exhibition flying in New York. Came from Vancouver to join RFC in Ottawa, 18 May 1915. Sent to Farnborough for instruction but the RNAS asked for him. Appointed Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant, 26 June 1915. Subsequently at a series of British airship stations (Polegate, Kingsnorth, Capel, Wormwood, and Pulham) - no obvious connection with Italy. Served in RAF as an Administrative Officer during the Second World War.

Is this conclusive evidence?--TraceyR (talk) 12:08, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Commonwealth Graves Commission details. Flight archive reports that he died on active service - in an administrative role? --TraceyR (talk) 12:11, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good work, he would still be considered on active service even in a desk job. Nice to know how he died. His RAeC record card #20 gives the address as Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Montreal. Freebmd.org has two R Wickhams actually both R F Wickhams born in Q4 1886!
  • Wickham Reginald Francis Mile End
  • Wickham Richard Francis E Brentford

Also from freebmd it appears that Reginald probably died in 1887 leaving Richard as the only one born in that quarter to survive. MilborneOne (talk) 21:58, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

www.freebmd.org - how does one get into this site? It just tells me that it's not ready yet. Thanks. --TraceyR (talk) 20:32, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
