Is there a way to get all of the addressess for these. I would like to put these in a GIS. The USGS Names (GNIS) database doesn't have very many nature centers on it. I would put it back on the wiki.134.67.6.14 (talk) 20:56, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article has an egregious WP:NOTDIRECTORY problem. That's not acceptable, and I don't see any argument which counters that. As such, I'll be restoring the version which replaced all of the external links with redlinks, per WP:BUILD. Editors who wish to maintain huge collections of links to websites are advised to do so outside of Wikipedia. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 11:41, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please hold off on your change. I have been working on more useful lists for each state, but it takes me along time. Jllm06 (talk) 12:14, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you need a list of external links to every center in the interim? It's there in the page history if needed. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 12:16, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than removing all the links, why don't you turn them into footnotes? That would be more helpful than eliminating everything. The list is used by the Association of Nature Center Administrators and individual nature centers to locate other centers, and I hope by individuals interested in visiting nature centers. As a volunteer, my time is limited. Thank you for your consideration.Jllm06 (talk) 13:11, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Because they're not references. As I've previously stated, the purpose of Wikipedia is not to provide a directory service, no matter how useful that may be. If you wish to retain a copy of such information it should be hosted elsewhere. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 13:22, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I ask you to reconsider changing this list. It will lose much of its useability as a reference. It is tremendously useful as an easily edited article for people around the country through Wikipedia, as seen by the many editors. PLEASE do not make the change you are proposing. I am not a software expert, just a dedicated volunteer.Jllm06 (talk) 14:07, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've brought this to a wider forum at WT:USA so that more opinions can be gathered. It also affects quite a few related lists, so it's something that the WikiProject should probably reach a consensus on. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 14:17, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In general, external links don't belong in the body of an article. They should only appear as references (if they are being used that way) or as ELs in a separate section below the references. Using them in this fashion may look "neater" because it eliminates redlinks, but it discourages the creation of potential articles to "turn the redlinks blue". I'm with Chris on this, they need to go. Imzadi 1979  14:51, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The links need to go completely. Either redlink or delete the list entry, but both the WP:NOTDIRECTORY and WP:ELNO apply here. GregJackP Boomer! 18:28, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
