Institutes on the list[edit]

The introduction claims that "Universities are regarded as comprising all institutions of higher education recognized as universities by the public or ecclesiastical authorities in charge and authorized to confer academic degrees in more than one faculty." However, the list includes many university colleges in the UK that do not meet this definition, of not from the date given as their "date of recognition". Manchester is, for example, given as 1851, the foundation date of Owens College; the earliest university to be established in Manchester was the Victoria University in 1880. See List of UK universities by date of foundation.Robminchin (talk) 20:12, 1 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried for internal consistency by listing university colleges from their date of foundation/recognition as such, with footnotes saying when (or if) they were recognised as universities. The alternative (sticking strictly to the definition given in the introduction) would mean moving historically important institutes later (e.g. Owens College) or removing them entirely (UCL, KCL). Note – in keeping with the definition of "university", I have not included single-faculty medical or theological colleges, only broad-based university colleges and science colleges. Robminchin (talk) 13:12, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Early modern universities in List of modern universities?[edit]

According to the title and introduction of this article, this is about a list of modern universities in Europe from 1801 to 1945. But the list also shows early modern universities from 1501 to 1800. Why are these included as well? Isn't this a large repetition of List of early modern universities in Europe and shouldn't these removed instead? Mr. D. E. Mophon (talk) 20:17, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the lists of universities from 1501 to 1800 per WP:MOSBIO WP:BOLD. Mr. D. E. Mophon (talk) 20:30, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure you mean WP:MOSBIO? That's about biographies of people so doesn't seem relevant here.
Sorry, I meant per WP:BOLD. Mr. D. E. Mophon (talk) 13:57, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The list here was of universities that were active during the period, not just ones founded in that period, as is the case with List of early modern universities in Europe. Robminchin (talk) 02:48, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The intro states clearly "list of modern universities in Europe (1801–1945) contains all universities that were founded in Europe after the French Revolution and before the end of World War II". Definition is when the university was founded as an institute of higher education. Of course there are those defined as ancient universities or medieval universities and still active during the modern period up to the present, but those are not considered as modern universities at all. Mr. D. E. Mophon (talk) 13:57, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not disputing that it's reasonable to move them off this list, as they don't meet the definition, just pointing out that they were probably on here following the model of the other list – sorry for any misunderstanding. Robminchin (talk) 02:17, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Should this be included here, even if it only lasted 25 years? —Brigade Piron (talk) 20:57, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any reason why not. The page has other universities (such as the Ionian Academy in Corfu) that only existed for a limited time. The New University of Brussels has probably been omitted previously due to the base source for this list (Rüegg 2004) giving when universities were found by city, so second (or later) foundations in a city are sometimes omitted.
