San Francisco

The characterization of San Francisco in this list makes it sound mostly like a tourism destination; its economic, cultural, and historical importance is much greater than that. Compare the first line of the Los Angeles description:

Los Angeles is one of the world's centers of media, business, and international trade.

to the first line of the San Francisco description:

San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination renowned for its beauty, cosmopolitan flair, steep rolling hills, and eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture.

I it would be appropriate for the first line to reflect San Francisco's role as the main urban hub of Northern California and of a region that is the center of the world's technology industry.

I did a full clean-up of this page, trimming the list to 100 cities and using a verifiable source (in this case, California Department of Finance estimates for January 1, 2006) for the population figures. Dtcomposer 21:17, 13 March 2007 (UTC)


Why San Diego come first if it has less inhabitants (650k < 973k) ? Or is the number wrong? See:

pictures and descriptions

I didn't change the order or any of the original information. But for lack of a Cities of California article, I figured this could do the deed. Do reply with your thoughts. I pulled the pictures off the individual city pages. More pictures could easily be added. Note, the above link for Cities of California takes you to List of Cities of California which is an entirely different idea. Lists need not provide information other than A, B, C, etc. There seem to be a number of "Cities of" and "List of Cities of" articles out there and perhaps I'm not entirely clear on the distinction. Fresno factoid

I changed the note about Fresno being the largest city in California not adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. San Jose is larger and also not on the Pacific, although it is of course on San Francisco bay. I changed it to read that its the largest not adjacent to salt water, which I'd bet is what was meant by the original writer. Dappawit (talk) 04:27, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

I updated the list to use the January 1, 2010 figures from the California Department of Finance and the July 1, 2008 figures from the United States Census Bureau. Dtcomposer (talk) 01:08, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Merge to List of incorporated cities and towns in California?

It seems to me that this article should be merged into List of incorporated cities and towns in California since that article seems to be better organized, has more content, and covers all 459 cities and 22 towns in the state (between which there is no legal difference in California), instead of only the 100 largest covered in this article. The other article is also easier to read.

Also, the "Description" factoids column on this page seems random at best.

That article does have a "see also" to this article, but it seems like List of incorporated cities and towns in California performs all the functions of this article, and better.

If anyone agrees, I'll throw the "Merge" tags onto the two articles.

Are you sure this is L.A.?

The pix for L.A. looks like Denver or somewhere; the mountains are majastic! If I plop down Peg Man anywhere in the L.A. area, even at the base of mountain ranges, the mountains in the distance are pitifully below the rooftops of any buildings, whereas the mountains in the pix soar! According to Wikimedia Commons, the photo was taken from 34° 0' 30.96" N, 118° 21' 51.84" W, and the mountains in the background are the San Gabriel mountains. Apparently the photo was shot from Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area near Culver City. —Stepheng3 (talk) 23:14, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Of course it's LA. Aside from the fact that those buildings clearly are downtown Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Mountains reach up to 10,000 feet tall. The picture was taken with a telephoto lens, making them look more impressive. The tallest mountains in that picture are about 38 miles distant from downtown LA. That's actually a little closer than the Rockies are to Denver. It's a little-known fact outside of SoCal that we are ringed by impressive mountain ranges. You don't see them in Google Street View because those photos were taken with a wide-angle lens, making everything appear small and distant, even objects that are relatively near to the camera. Jurupa Valley

I assume Jurupa Valley is currently not on this list because it was incorporated after the 2010 census, correct? I have thus temporarily a note addressing this fact.[1] Zzyzx11 (talk) 22:42, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Santa Ana

The buildings in the photo for Santa Ana are in fact located in the neighboring city of Costa Mesa. I would suggest using a photo of the downtown Santa Ana skyline, but cannot find one on Wikimedia Commons. Perhaps a photo of the Old Orange County Courthouse (also located in Santa Ana and a well-recognized local landmark) would suffice? Kneel28 (talk) 21:25, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Santa Clarita, annexations and the census

The 2010 census is nice baseline, but what of cities that have since expanded their boundaries. Case in point: the city of Santa Clarita, through annexations of areas that were previously unincorporated LA County, now has over 200,000 residents. – Its not a matter of possession. Its in or out. An alternate title might be List of largest cities in countries in the European Union by population within city limits which is accurate but a little long. GregKaye 11:10, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Oppose the first, no comment on the second. "California cities" and "cities in California" are both equally acceptable and I don't see a good reason to change it.
