Original intent[edit]

Okay, I've created this page under the name Judo techniques rather than Budo techniques in the interest of limiting it to the more formal forms, and have initially not made a distinction between competition techniques and others. Although I think a clarification of what techniques are allowed in competition and another article which inclues other budo such as jujutsu or karate would be good, my thinking that this is simpler. Ideally I think that every technique would include the English transliteration, Japanese characters, a literal translation and a short description. Unfortunately, I'm not qualified to do much of that, so thanks in advance to my fellow Wikipedians! - Rorybowman 16:37, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sub Classifications[edit]

This article classifies techniques as http://www.judoinfo.com does. But the following site, http://www.jitsu-club.co.uk/forum/jitsu_techniques.asp, shows further breakdown

nice work!

And another interesting classification page, http://www.jigorokano.it/Tecnica.html. [1]

Ne-waza[edit]

I added Ne-waza to include Push Sweep. There may be a better heading than Ne-waza as it includes locks, chokes, and pins. Surely there is a Judo name for BJJ's Push Sweep, but for now I hope this addition of mine is apropriate for now. Or else should there be a different list?

Given that this is a list of judo techniques and judo is governed by the Kodokan I would suggest that "unrecognized techniques" that are not part of standard judo play and competition would be better placed in a different article such as "BJJ Techniques," "Karate Techniques," "Wing Chun Techniques," etcetera. This was the rationale used long ago when the "partial list of grappling holds" was added to grappling hold and this article created. Providing a distinction between judo, "generic" grappling and professional wrestling was part of the rationale then and may be worth considering now. Rorybowman 14:59, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move to "List of judo techniques"?[edit]

Since this page consists solely of a list of techniques, shouldn't it be moved to a page entitled "List of judo techniques" per WP:LIST? Bradford44 15:51, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As the author of the original stub and first flesher-outer on this article, my initial goal was something similar to Grappling_holds that might include brief introductory paragraphs on classes of techniques with a list as part of the general article. While a redirect from a list article might be useful, the guildeline for "standalone lists" ends up creating an article similar to this anyway, so my preference would be for someone qualified to perhaps add some fleshy bits to this article, rather than split the subject. The hard part of compiling techniques and Japenese text is largely done, so my preference would be to flesh out the article to be more than a simple list and place a redirect under lists if any editor thinks that that is where folks would look. My initial guess is that the general phrase "judo technique" is more intuitive for most readers than "list of judo techniques" and so should be preferred. Rorybowman 16:45, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Maybe I can help. Bradford44 16:48, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possible misplaced line[edit]

There's this in the article: "Te Guruma would be hand wheel... and it is a legitimate technique in Judo, Iain Hughes, Spitfire Judo Club, UK"

I think his intent was to contribute, but it seems more a discussion than useful info. I'm changing it back. Petruza (talk) 21:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of Kodokan judo techniques[edit]

I've started a new thread at Talk:List of Kodokan judo techniques#List of judo techniques as it's not clear to me on why we have two lists. --Marc Kupper|talk 07:50, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unrecognized techniques[edit]

Unfortunately this article contains almost no explanatory commentary, and could be improved by adding some. In particular, what is the implication of something being an "unrecognized technique" (for which various examples are given throughout the article)? If a technique is unrecognized, does that mean it's illegal? If not illegal, is any scoring that results from the move not counted? What if someone uses an unrecognized technique that causes the opponent to tap out--does the use of that technique invalidate the score? Loraof (talk) 23:15, 27 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
