High school/college festivals[edit]

Question: Are high school and/or college jazz festivals permitted on this list?

Well, my opinion is that we should limit the list to festivals that are big and well-known, or otherwise significant. That is, festivals that are likely to have a Wikipedia article about them (some day). --Jonik 14:22, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
My school hosts a large jazz festival each year in march. It is only a high school festival, but each year we bring in two famous acts, such as Maynard Ferguson, Stanley Clarke, the Count Basie Orchestra, Spyro Gyra, and the Woody Herman Orchestra, among others. Also, this is a unique festival because of the fact that few, if any, other high schools do anything like this, with such big name acts. Could this be included in the list and would this warrant a Wikipedia page? ptfreak 12:36, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"...big and well-known, or otherwise significant", standards?[edit]

Hi Folks, I can appreciate the need for a statement like this, but under what circumstances does a jazz festival fit this criteria?

Festivals that are well known to the general public because of their longevity or are supported by large advertising campaigns seem like an obvious inclusion. But what about festivals that are significant to a large metropolitan area. For example, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco (Bay Area), in addition to having its own WP article is better attended than the San Jose Jazz Festival that is 50 miles to the south of SF. Doesn't this make it "bigger" than the San Jose festival and thus qualified for inclusion?

Also, what about festivals that are "...big and well-known, or otherwise significant" to a particular community of musicians and/or fans interested in a subset (or very broad array) of jazz? In my example above, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass used to be exclusively a bluegrass festival, but has since expanded into something more than just bluegrass. There are also instrument dedicated jazz festivals for guitar, brass, and percussion. Could these be significant?

The "...at least some international recognition" adds a unique aspect to the criteria as well. The Tarragona International Dixieland Festival in Spain is not listed or the International Dixieland Festival in Dresden, Germany. Excluded, an oversight, just not contributed yet or...?

External Links to be Removed?[edit]

The article is turning into a directory of self-promoted links. Is there any good reason to have all of these links in the article? Any notable festivals will have their own pages which can be linked to. Wikipedia is not a directory. DaveChild (talk) 14:44, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
