James Buchanan[edit]

The referenced conclusion of the James Buchanan page is that there is no evidence which currently supports the notion of Buchanan as having sexual relations with men. The reference for both assertions is exactly the same book, which I don't have. The main content page on Buchanan shouldn't be so clearly at variance with this page, especially when quoting from the same text! Is there any way that the original editor who cites Buchanan here as gay could take a look at the main Buchanan page and offer an opinion as to why he or she has come to a different conclusion than the one at James Buchanan? CzechOut 07:56, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I included Buchanan in the list. I read it first in a book by James Loewen called Lies Across America. I no longer have the book, so I can't check to see if it cites the same reference. However, there's little evidence given, for that matter, that anyone before the 20th century had sex with any person in particular (besides children, and with a DNA test). Our entries on Sappho, Edward II, or Queen Christina imply they had relations with people of the same sex for what they wrote or what was written about them. The entry on James Buchanan mentions that his most significant personal relationship - lasting for 16 years - was with Rufus de Vane King, and that he was desolate and heartbroken at King's passing based on what Buchanan wrote, or what was written about him. If we're waiting for evidence of sexual relations, what form would that evidence have to appear as?Moni3 12:15, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]
CzechOut's point isn't about Buchanan being gay or not (at least not directly). Hir point is that Buchanan's article a) isn't in an LGBT cat, b) states that there's no evidence of his being LGBT, c) has our project banner, and d) is on this list. A & B directly contrast with C & D. So, then, back to the question - was Buchanan gay? If so, A & B should be changed, while if not, C & D should be changed. As someone who hasn't read much on Buchanan, I won't make that call. But glbtq.com states at least a homosocial relationship with King, if not more. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 15:37, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm clearly confused then. I don't know about point A, but there is a section in Buchanan's article regarding his personal relationships with his fiancee and her subsequent death, and then with Rufus King, the gossip it caused during his time, and the conclusions some historians have come to as a result of reading Buchanan's own correspondence, as well as what others wrote about him. I'm concerned that if we're required to prove that all the people on our list had regular sexual relations with people of the same sex, our list would be limited to porn stars - theirs would be caught on film. Yes, it's an exaggeration, but what sort of evidence is required in the inclusion to our list?Moni3 15:53, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]
A reliable source stating his sexual orientation. Doesn't have to say who he had sex with, just that he was gay. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 17:15, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If he hasn't yet been deleted, does that mean for now he shall stay?Moni3 12:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]
Ah, well. It has been removed. I was attempting to give some other folks a chance to chime in here. Again, what suffices as a reliable source? A book that says he was gay? In 1858? What kind of proof is needed? Interesting, the same sort of discussion is on the Donner Party page. People dispute that cannibalism took place even though 10 survivors admitted to it. Still not enough proof. History, and our interpretation of it, is fascinating.Moni3 19:00, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]
Unfortunately (IMHO) it's not really "history". It's what we can verify. So "what suffices" in this case is a source that says "he's gay" - doesn't have to be his writing, doesn't have to be from 1858. But if we can point to a source that says that, then it satisfies the three key policies - WP:N, WP:NOR, and WP:V. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 21:34, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stéphane Bern[edit]

Stéphane Bern could be added to your list. He's a French journalist who's been on TV and radio. He came out in an article in the magazine "Têtu" (a French gay magazine) in 2009 and mentioned his homosexuality again in a TV show that same year. In 2006, a decision of the court allowed a magazine to publish his name in an article about gays in Paris: http://www.tetu.com/actualites/france/La-justice-autorise-levocation-de-lhomosexualite-de-Stephane-Bern-et-Marc-Olivier-Fogiel-9648. It is of common knowledge in France that he is gay. He has a radio show on the main public radio "France Inter" where there are regular references about his homosexuality.

You should add him on your list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amidabutsu (talkcontribs) 10:24, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Leonard Bernstein[edit]

I've only ever heard or read of sources referring to Bernstein as being a gay man who happen to get married. No credible evidence or sources to my mind that support the idea he was Bisexual. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.205.240.98 (talk) 14:52, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
