Untitled[edit]

Doesz anyone know when the first fantasy story was written? What is it and when was it? Did it predate the HOmeric epics? Am I right that the basis of modern entertainment stories have been the Homeric epics as many of today's leisure like sports were derived from the Greek civilization?

Tamora Pierce[edit]

Does it seem like Tamora Pierce has way too many novels on this list for an author of her standing? She has neither the popular or critical acclaim of the vast majority of authors on this list.

Just so. Indeed, there is a fair bit of EFP and like sludge here. But it is difficult if not impossible to strike listings once placed without starting terrible rounds of recriminations and vituperation. The best alternative is simply to add better works by better authors. Owlcroft 08:56, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dark Tower[edit]

Shouldn't the Dark Tower series by Stephen King be on here? --Endlessmug 00:14, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Endlessmug[reply]

Is it fantasy, science fiction, or horror? Sci-fi has its own list, and if horror doesn't, then maybe you should start it. If it is fantasy, though, then go ahead and add it. MamaGeek (talk/contrib) 01:58, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alice Novels[edit]

Are the Alice novels really appropriate for this list, and if so, should not the Leven Thumps series be added also? Sporks.Are.Loverly 17:03, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Sporks.Are.Loverly[reply]

Discworld Series[edit]

I typed in the entirety of the currently existing Discworld series; feel free to delete my change if you find it necessary. 139.55.19.51 00:35, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Sporks.Are.Loverly[reply]

Dark Series[edit]

Shouldn't the Dark Series by Christine Feehan be on here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by YouWantThis (talkcontribs) 14:44, 26 October 2007 (UTC) On Another Topic, I think that there are too many 'science fiction' type novels on here, and not enough traditional fantasy novels. Could it be possible, for the sake of purists/perfectionist/black and white no grey/ type people, if you could put more actual fantasy novels on this page-It would be fabulous! Also, you might want to remove some very obviously science fiction novels from this page. Perhaps, soemone can explain what the difference between sci-fi and fantasy is, I can tell the difference, but being able to explain it is quite another story. Thank You, and a bigger thank you if you can fix the problem! 71.130.237.63 19:00, 14 November 2007 (UTC)Theodore from California.[reply]

"Fair use" images removed[edit]

Wikipedia's fair use policy does not allow use of copyright images in list articles such as this one where there is no 'discussion'. The pictures just make the article 'pretty' and that is not enough to meet WP:FU. -- The Red Pen of Doom 02:54, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anne McCaffrey[edit]

Tell me I'm an idiot and I'm just not seeing the Dragonxxxx books? On a related note I almost missed Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books simply because I don't automatically think of Velgarth as the overarching name for those books - is there a way to do multiple keywords? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.96.244.231 (talk) 23:01, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"namely..."[edit]

Does anyone else find the "namely..." bits very annoying and somewhat unnecessary? The fact that for some authors they name the novels in a series and others not, it just seems stupid. I'll be bold, and see what the outcome is. Alan16 talkcount 22:49, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

21KB - that is one hell of a lot of pointless information. Alan16 talkcount 23:11, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think thats a good call. -- The Red Pen of Doom 11:27, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Janna Nickerson[edit]

News coverage - [1] - [2] - [3] The sources aren't fantastic, but show a general notability. The news source though, is a reliable reference. Alan16 talkcount 12:22, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

She is self published getting "local color" at a local news. Not in anyway notable. -- The Red Pen of Doom 01:45, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Being "self-published" does not make it automatically non-notable. I think there is certainly enough mentioning of her in 3rd party sources. Alan16 talkcount 03:21, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then create an article about her and see if it survives AfD. (and really, a blog, a catalog and a librarian's local newsletter (as much as I love librarians) are not just "not fantastic" as far as sources go, they are non-starters)-- The Red Pen of Doom 03:34, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List selection criteria[edit]

According to the Manual of style for stand-alone lists, each list should have selection criteria for membership in the list. This keeps the list from being indiscriminate. The logical criterion for this list, consistent with the term "notable" in the first sentence, is to allow only books that have Wikipedia articles on them. I am going to put all the redlinked articles in Talk:List of fantasy novels (A–H)/redlinks. These could be added to Wikipedia:Requested articles or perhaps some list of requested articles in the relevant wikiprojects. RockMagnetist (talk) 21:10, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want an article on the list but don't wish to go to the effort of creating an article: an appropriate way to add a book that does not yet have its own article is to provide citations to show that it meets the general notability guideline. Note that citations of the books themselves do not qualify as reliable, independent sources. However, once you've found the references, why not create the article? RockMagnetist (talk) 21:46, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

should the Bible be on the list?[edit]

84.48.255.36 (talk) 15:00, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Leaving aside the subjective and charged issue of whether it is or is not fiction, no. Whatever else it may be, it is definitely a mixed-genre anthology, which by definition is not a novel. BPK (talk) 15:42, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Date / Time[edit]

Could we automatically add the year of publishing? I am trying to find an old fantasy novel I read in 1983 or so but I don't remember the author or the title. I was hoping to see a list including the years. This would help me find it more rapidly so. 2A02:8388:1641:4980:0:0:0:2 (talk) 11:15, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
