Proposal re: reorganise selected units for this list[edit]
It's not really the most useful to compare a) the GCCSAs of Australia (very broad metropolitan areas) to the b) urban areas of New Zealand to the c) CCD of Honolulu to d) whichever other statistical units are being selected for the other nations. If this is a list of urban area populations, then the SUAs of Australia would be most comparable to the urban areas of NZ (both are built of similar geographical units, SA2 units under each country's relevant census geographical standard), so I might as a first step change the Australian capital city figures to the relevant significant urban area numbers, as are listed for the other Australian cities. We'd have to also decide what figure is most comparable from the US Census. Probably the urban area of Honolulu, which has ~800,000 people, and should be ranked much higher on this list. - Randwicked you are absolutely right, looking at Sydney's boundaries the population data appears to includes Penrith City which from a New Zealand or American perspective would not be classified as part of Sydney City. As this article is a list of cities in Oceania and not a list Urban Areas or Metropolitan areas, the Australian data is misleading. StraightTalkNZ (talk) 09:39, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- NZ published in 2018 a new classification, one of 'Functional Urban Areas' - to quote Stats NZ, "Examples of functional areas internationally include: OECD functional urban areas, metropolitan and micropolitan areas (USA), census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations (Canada), and significant urban areas (Australia). All these methodologies use census commuting data as a proxy for socio-economic linkages." I.e. here is a reliable source stating that Australian SUAs (already in this list), NZ functional urban areas, and US metropolitan areas may be considered the same. - Another list page, List of metropolitan areas in Oceania by population, lists cities by metro population (MSA for USA, FUA for NZ, and SUA for Australia). It is then probably most appropriate that this list revert to listing cities based on local government definitions instead to supplment that page as currently this page both doubles up on what that page is showing for Australia, plus misrepresents data for other countries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.211.73.178 (talk) 05:24, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Re-fixing of the articles list[edit]
What happened exactly?. This is not true, and so a problem. Sydney is the largest city in Oceania. And why is it Auckland?, New Zealand's population is not that large or few. 114.79.23.18 (talk) 17:30, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

Cities in New Guinea[edit]
Jayapura, Sorong, Manokwari, Merauke, Nabire, Timika, and Wamena have all been left out of this list, despite being larger than some cities which appear. 192.34.130.239 (talk) 16:17, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
