Island check TODO[edit]

On the List of Inner Hebrides#Uninhabited islands Start at Eilean Fladday, and check downwards. Anything that not on the list or the one above, is probably too small to be notable. scope_creepTalk 12:51, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Constituencies/towns[edit]

  • There seems little point in including constituencies in the tables, since no island is shared between two constituiencies. In any case, do you mean Westminster or Holyrood?
  • Most of the "towns" shown in the tables are too small to be towns. And again, the real nearest town is likely to be the same for all bays on any particular island.---Ehrenkater (talk) 09:39, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ehrenkater: How goes it? More than 2.5m people in Scotland live in villages that only have a post office, and they are important as social hubs. It is important they get recognised as places of economic activity, which is badly lacking in the north, mostly coming from the ethnic cleansing in the 18th century. Constituencies; Somebody asked me to add them in, I not sure now why. It is a long while ago. I think it give it a idea of where they are. Parts of Scotland are exceeedingly remote. I'm not sure if that was the reason, or to use as group funtion in a sql query as the OS Maps guys here is notoriously expensive and very well licensed. scope_creepTalk 10:04, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for the largest islands you could put "nearest village" in the table. For the rest, there will be only one village, or none, on the island, so you could put the location information, such as a grid reference, or nearest larger island or place on the mainland, immediately following the name of the island, and not repeated on every row of the table. The constituency doesn't give that much help in locating the island: they are mostly in Argyll & Bute. The OS maps are available free on bing.com.---Ehrenkater (talk) 10:19, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I did notice that. I'll give it a go and see how the sql query looks. They are mostly in Argyll and Bute as that has been the area i've been working on, the most. There is another at article at List of bays of Scotland. Take a look at that and see what you think. Bing maps is a consumer tool, not a pro business tool. If your business, it comes with a whole load of licences. To be honest I wish I hadn't started it. scope_creepTalk 10:45, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think Nearest Village is good, particularly on the island ones. I change that over in the couple weeks. scope_creepTalk 10:51, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My comments on List of bays of Scotland are much the same as on this article: the towns aren't towns, and the constituencies are too large and chunky to be much help in locating the bay. Also some of the constituencies aren't actually constituencies but council areas. For instance there isn't a Highland constituency: there is a Ross, Skye and Lochaber constituency etc. Grid references would have been useful.---Ehrenkater (talk) 12:14, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ehrenkater: I'll take it on board, its obviously too clunky at the moment, roo rough. I think I was planning grid refs but discovered using how to coord in the KML app, so they could generate a map, but very clunky. scope_creepTalk 19:38, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
