No. He believed in God. He said so in The Age of Reason. Nick Graves (talk) 13:43, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Was Nietzsche an atheist?[edit]

Nietzsche's famous quote is used here as proof of his atheism. While this might be a fact, there should either be a better source, given the poetic and allegorical contexts of the quote (and there are several, he stated it at least twice), or a recognition of ambiguity. Nietzsche's opinions tended to fluctuate on this point at the very least. 184.77.189.134 (talk) 08:50, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Whether or not he was an atheist, I don't know. But, it's my understanding that the "God is dead" thing merely meant that the God(s) that people had been talking about up til that point (even when they disagreed on what it meant) were all nonsense, so, in *that* sense, "God is dead", so, either way, having the quotation there is inappropriate (regardless as to how memorable it is). I'll look for a source on his being an atheist later. Byelf2007 (talk) 30 August 2012
